Subject: 4.7 water pump ? IP: Logged
Message: I noticed a very small amount of anti freeze dripping down from around the side of the water pump but couldn't locate the source. Looks like it might have a pin hole in the gasket as it doesn't look like it's coming from the drain holes in the water pump. Truck's running cool, but the signs of antifreeze mean something's is going south.
ANYwho, I am going to replace it and want to see if anyone knows who makes the best replacement for the 4.7. I looked at Airtex ($45) and AC Delco ($78) at RockAuto. Is the AC Delco worth the extra $30? I have used Airtex water pumps before without problems, but want to get your guys comments on which is going to be the best for the long haul.
Thanks,

Message: Never done the water pump on my 4.7.
But, someone who has said it had a composite or plastic impeller! I.E. no corrosion capabilities on the turbine.
Is your bearing loose, and play at the shaft w/o the belt?
O/W, maybe just the gasket? I'd be wiling to bet that it has the rubber o-ring type gasket like the valve covers and the intake manifold, etc.

Message: Yeah, I am thinking it's the gasket or O-ring since the bearings are tight and the weep holes are not leaking antifreeze. If it was bad bearings or shaft seals the antifreeze should be coming out of the weep holes.
Funny thing, it's not leaking anymore and the antifreeze level in the tank has not gone down at all. Oh well, I hope it holds until it gets a bit cooler outside. nothing like replacing a waterpump when it's 100 degrees out.
