Subject: Squeaking sway bar bushings
IP: Logged

Message:
The front end sway bar bushings squeak on my 2000 QC 4x4. The dealer has replaced them and lubed them with a antiseize lubricant. I finally got the Service Mgr. to admit this is a problem with Dakotas and Durangos and no fix is forthcoming from Dodge. Only fix is pull them apart and re-lube. Anybody got this problem and how about a fix?

I just had mine in too with the same problem. I made the dealer have a tech go with me to make sure I wasn't just hearing things. Tech heard the squeaking and determined it was the same prob. The tech said it was not normal. I have about 28,500 on mine and am currently waiting for new bushing to come in.

Whenever I go out off roading and do a lot of
thrashing through water, about a week or two
later my front sway bar bushings start squeeking.

It is a little messy, but I just spray white
lithium grease into the gaps between the swaybar
and the bushings as best as I can
and the squeeking always goes away.

I am sure I saw somewhere on the net, probably one of the performance suspension sites, that they are making bushings that can be lubed. Worth looking into....

why not replace the cheap rubber bushings with the Rancho poly bushings, may solve problems. I have a squeek on my left front side of my 2k Dak, when i bounce the suspension. I was thinking swaybar bushings, and or the sway bar links also..heck maybe even the control arm bushings, but I doubt that.

I got the same squeaking and sprayed some lithium grease around the bushings. It goes away but only for a while. I think I will have the dealer replace them along with the rotors they put on just one month ago because they became warped over 20k miles. Now I have to have them replaced again after just 6k miles.
Dodge knows the brakes and bushings are a problem but have decided to do nothing.
How disappointing a reaction to a know design flaw(s).
Becoming increasingly unhappy with my DAK.

Here is the cure fellows!!! I have had this problem for app. 1 year. I have sprayed lithium grease, Armor-All/ Son-of-a-Gun, silicone, etc. on the bushings, and this is only a temporary fix. My dealer also did the removal and put anti-seize on the bushings. This worked for about 2 weeks. I have been trying to figure out something to cure it, and I think I did. I removed my sway bar, and cleaned the area where the bushings ride (you can see where the paint is rubbed off the bar), and sprayed STP belt dressing on the bar and the bushings. The squeak is completely gone. I even took my truck thru a series of potholes to see if it worked, and had no noise whatsoever. I am sure any type of belt dressing would work, not just STP. This takes less than an hour, and is well worth it. I got sick of sounding like a 80's model Chevrolet coming thru store parking lots. Hope this helps everybody.

Hmmm...belt dressing...hadn't thought about that!!

I've ran the gambit too....WD-40, various types of grease, silicone spray, etc. The dealership just replaced both the outers & covered the new ones with an anti-sieze lube...nasty silver stuff, but I don't doubt that I'll be squeaking within the next month. Looks like I'll go get myself a can of belt dressing in preparation!

I just got back from the dodge dealer, I found out that they have a new part number (new Part) for the front outer sway bar bushings.

They had 2 in stock and went and snatched them up right away, my truck is sweeking like crazy.

$4.50 a piece, under $10.00 for both. They seem to be harder than the stock ones. I think poly insted of rubber.

Hi all.
I am new to this board, as I just PU'd my '03 CC a few weeks ago, so I do not have the squeaking bushing yet.....and hopefully never will.
I have done several mods to my previous car and when I changed to bigger sways (and also used polyurethane bushing) the squeaking was pretting annoying. I wrapped some teflon tape (the kind you use for pipe threads) around the bar, and slide the bushings over the tape. I made a huge difference......and it was inexpensive to boot. Give it a try, it should work.

I wouldn't worry until it gets like mine. I hear a rattle when going over railroad tracks for a while , I thought it was a bad shock. I was changing my oil this past week-end when I noticed this piece of metal sticking down on the driver side. When I looked closer I realized it was half of the sway bar bracket that was bent down. There wasn't any sign of a bushing and the noise I was hearing was the bar slapping against the frame. I guess I drive too hard...DUH!!!

Dealer installed the new sway arm bushings in the front end of my 2000 Dakota Quad Cab. Service Manager says the new bushings look like they are made out of urethane. No more squeaks in the front end. Hopefully, this will do the trick. Service guys at the dealer wanted to know how I found out about the new bushings, as DC hadn't put out a Service Bulletin. I told them to thank DodgeDakotas.com and it's great members.

You pretty much need to jack the vehicle up...although, during re-assembly, some SLIGHT weight on the wheels will help get everything lined back up.

I don't remember the torque spec for the bolts off of the top of my head, but I will try and look it up in the FSM when I get home this evening.

The bolts on the lower suspension arms (A-arms) should be torqued to 25/ft lbs. The inner sway/stabalizer bar nuts get torqued to 140 ft/lbs. while the bolts go to 80 ft/lbs.

I know exactly what you mean. I was at the dodge dealer monday with the same squeaking/creaking front end. Of course, the bushings suck and they said they could replace them, but also mentioned the problem would more than likely reoccur. I'm thinking about replacing the shocks with Ranchos. Ranchos come with urethane bushing according to the info I researched on their website. I might give it a try.

actgog: The problem is NOT the shocks and/or their bushings. The problem is with the bushings that hold your front sway bar in place. And, beings that no one has yet released a poly-urethane bushing kit, or sway-bar specific bushings, for the Dakotas & Durangos, there is no real solution to this problem.

The only thing available for us at this point are basically work-arounds.

** You can have the dealership replace the bushings. Which is good for a couple of weeks (if you go four-wheeling...like some of us do) or maybe even a year.
** You can resign yourself to pulling the sway bar off from time-to-time, cleaning the bar & bushings, regreasing the bushings, and re-installing the sway bar. But as with the first work-around, this will only last for so long.

Or, if you really want to be rid of the problem, you can ditch the factory sway-bar, and go with an aftermarket unit like that from Hotchkis. While I have no personal experience with the Hotchkis sway-bar, I have not heard of any bushing problems with them.

Speaking for myself, I am tired of asking the dealership to replace/lube them. And, I am tired of spending an hour underneath my Dak doing this menial labor myself. So....here is what I am going to do with mine:

I'm going to pull the sway-bar off and set up the inner sway-bar bushings with grease zerks myself, as they seem to be the most problematic ones. The outer bushings generally don't squeek, or at least not in my experience.

To accomplish this, I am going to get my hands on a 5/16" or 3/8" rubber belt hole punch. These look like a regular punch with the exception that the bottom half is completely hollow. The bottom edge is sharpened so that you can cut through rubber, leather, or whatever else you may need. For those that have worked road construction, these are extremely common around asphalt plants & rock crushers, as they are used to cut bolt holes in conveyer belts when they are being spliced or repaired. I'll use the hole punch to create a nice round hole through the bushing. This will not only provide a hole through which the grease can be "injected" into the center of the bushing, but it will also be big enough to allow the threaded end of the grease zerk to fit inside. Who knows? If I get lucky, it may seal around the grease zerk well enough to prevent grease from seeping out between the bushing retainer & the bushing.

Here's an example of one of these punches: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=45953

For the bushing retainers, I am going to drill & tap holes on the backside to fit grease zerks. This should keep them up and out of the way in case the sway bar should ever meet up with a solid object during my four-wheeling.

Lastly, I will probably cut some kind of groove around the inside circumference of the sway-bar bushing. This should provide a "pathway" for the grease to get pushed entirely around the bushing & sway-bar.

This should give me a way to insert some form of silicone grease (more water resistant) into the bushing without the hassle of pulling the sway bar off everytime.

For those that are putting in zerks keep in mind that standard grease eats rubber. Use Lithium grease or any other that says that it woln't eat rubber.
