Message: After following this thread, I wonder if your tanny isn't at the heart of your problem. Slipping clutches will generate a LOT of heat & even with a trans cooler most of that heat would be dumped into radiator. Have you pulled the tranny dipstick & looked at the fluid? is it red or dark brown? any burnt smells? If so, slipping clutches need immediate attention. Dodge trannys have band adjustments and they also use felt filters that plug real easy. It's alsop easy to get a filter on cocked which cuts off some of the fluid flow. Once the filter begins to plug, you get low fluid flow & yep, you guessed it, slipping clutches and lots of heat. The load of towing a boat will really make any tranny problems seem worse. I know, I tow a '03 Searay (3000+ lbs) with my '99. I hope this helps, Good luck!

Message: I had a similar problem with mine this year and only when towing my 19' bassboat. the temp would run real hot and almost overheat and only on the freeway. The end result was a new fan clutch and a thermostat and the problem is gone.

Message: what type of coolant did your truck originally have? the orange HOAT coolant? if so, did you stick with that for all services? switching coolant types can coat the inside of your cooling system and degrade performance. Is your fan shroud intact? do you (or your shop) have access to an infrared thermometer? read the temp of the radiator at the inlet and outlet and note the temp diff. 2000lbs is not a big load. after the thermostat, I'd look seriously at the radiator. as in new.

Message: Damn that sucks.
I live in Phoenix AZ. I tow about 2000Lbs (12 foot trailer and a few quads) and run the BIG mountain grades at 80 MPH passing EVERYBODY.
It never really goes over 1/2 the gauge on the hills and sits at 1/3 other times. Now that it is 110 degrees out the fan clutch engages occasionally. I also ran my truck with no clutch fan (electric only) but when I go off road in 4WD it DID hit the "H" once. (scary!) But not since I threw the clutch fan back on.
Oh yeah. I still run my electric fan controller. It brings on the electric early enough that IT is the primary fan and the clutch fan only grabs when it gets HOT. Well, with the A/C on the electric runs regardless.
I'd be curious to find out what you find. Hopefully it wont be a "4.7 thing". Oh yeah. I've got a 180 t-stat too.

Message: GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!
PUT A NEW MOPAR THERMOSTAT ON THIS WEEKEND (BOUGHT IT OVER A WEEK AGO AND JUST HAD TIME THIS WEEKEND TO WORK ON IT). HOOKED UP THE BOAT AND TOOK IT OUT FOR A SHORT DRIVE ON THE INTERSTATE. RAN THE TRUCK BETWEEN 70-80 MPH AND THE TEMP STAYED RIGHT AROUND 200-205. WHEN I RAN IN TOWN THE TEMP STAYED IN THE 195-200 RANGE.
I WAS SO HAPPY THE THERMOSTAT FIXED THE PROBLEM THAT I ALMOST JUMPED OUT OF THE TRUCK AND STARTED DANCING!!!! THAT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PRETTY.
MUCH RELIEF THAT IT IS RUNNING COOLER... THANKS FOR ALL THE INPUT. IT IS WEIRD THAT TRUCK WAS NOT OVERHEATING UNTIL IT WAS PULLING A LOAD.

Message: Fisherman thats awesome. I wish i had the same luck as you. As i posted above i had the same issue and after the fan clutch and t-stat were replaced the problem was gone. For a short while anyway. It resurfaced last weekend and its back a the dealer and they determined it to be what i thought it was all along. a bad head gasket or a cracked head.
