Subject: Just bought 02 4.7...questions. IP: Logged
Message: Hey there...I finally got my hands on a Dakota.
Will be picking it up on monday.
'02 CC 4.7 4x4 Sport Plus w/ 23K for $17000 even. Blue book is 18+ for private and 20+ for dealer retail.
I'm just wondering if there are any things I should be watching out for in specific. I do plan to go over it all, check fluid leves and so forth but just wondering if there is anything I should be looking for.
Thanks,
An excited new dodge owner!

Message: Congrats on your new Dak.
You will not be sorry, albiet the brakes suck. But no truck is perfect.I would keep a close eye on the brakes and ball joints. How-ever on my 01 Dak 4x4 4.7 slt auto cc I have had NO problems at all. I have 40,000 miles on it so far, with No complaints except for the brakes.
Enjoy your ride!

Message: Is it braking performance that is poor, or is it that the parts wear out fast or both?
I was looking for an 03 because of the 4wheel discs and better parts used (from what I've heard), but I found this one and its exactly what I was looking for equipment wise.
I took it for a short test drive and it is a HUGE step up from my current '93 GMC Jimmy...

Message: Braking performance is not that bad but the the front discs are junk, they warp and wear out fast. Can be replaced with better discs and pads for better performance and longer life.

Message: Yes, the front brakes seem to be the biggest
problem. Rotors warp very easy. Not worth turning
either. I spent 175 bux and replaced the rotors
(4X4) with Bendix and used ceramic pads. VERY
happy with brakes now.
Ball joints. Yes another problem with Dakotas.
I've been keeping a very close eye on mine. So far
the left upper has very little play. I'll replace
them myself before I let the dealer do it for
free with more of their junk parts.
Good luck on your Dakota, caulk04. You'll love it.
I'm on my third one. I had a 90, 98 and now a 02.

Message: When it comes time for ball joints, will it be making a nice solid clunk when I make hard corners and or bump the suspension pretty hard? If not, what are the tell tale signs. Also, what do you recommend for replacment parts? MOOG?

Message: I have an 02 QC AWD 4.7 auto. The brakes on mine are what I would term "lacking". Mostly due to the inability of the rear brakes to get much stopping done. The rear anti-lock starts pulsing the brakes very quickly.
Doing some things to reduce the brake dive helped some, but not enough to call it good. Things like better shocks (Edelbrock IAS), adjusting the rear brakes manually, and cranking the torsion bars to raise the front end are things that help the diving.
As for the BJs, I just had my uppers replaced after 30K miles. They could have gone longer before replacement, but I was almost out of warranty and wanted Dodge to pay to remove the rivets.
I was noticing a "thump" over a couple of low speed turns that had some surface irregularity in the middle. The thump was subtle, but wasn't originally there, and it was just feeling loose.
After the BJ replacement, the thump went away and the looseness was pretty much gone. at least for another 20-30K hopefully.
