I believe the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) can cause this if it gets carbon build up on it. Pretty simple fix, just replace the TPS, see if that fixes it. It can also cause RPM fluctuations (usually at idle), etc. I have a 97 CC SLT 5.2L 2wd, with 132K and haven't had that problem yet, but I have had occasional RPM fluctuations, from like 600 to 800 RPM, and my idle is usually sitting at 500 - 650 rpm :)

hey man, thanks, i will look into that, also, i did more research and i believe that im gonna clean the tb too, do i need to completely take it off the engine, or will it harm anything if i just wipe it out and spray some carb cleaner in there?

Hmmmm.. I forget, but I think carb cleaner is not a good idea on a Fuel Injection engine, but I really don't know. From what I hear/understand (never done this myself), best way to clean the intake is to spray in mists of water in the throttle body. Small enough portions of water won't cause the engine to hydrolock, etc.

Forgot to mention, the TPS is on the backside of the TB. Been awhile since I swapped my TB, so I forget how it's held in, but it's fairly easy to pull off. Check out www.dakota-trucks.net, check out the FAQ section, believe you're find most of your answers there. If not, check the archives.

Check the TPS sensor on the TB and the IAC sensor. The IAC can get pretty grungy, especially if you have a blown belly gasket. You can remove the tb and clean it seperately with carb cleaner. I used B-12 chemtool on mine. If you have oil buildup on the inside of your tb and the intake, you have a blown belly gasket and it will need to be replaced.

I had many of the same symptoms on my truck. Intermittent stalling at lights, split second shut downs on low acceleration, rough idle and high oil consumption. I knew my belly gasket was blown and I decided to go with the M1 and do away with the problem entirely.

I replaced the manifold, disassembled the tb and cleaned it completely and the sensors. My IAC was filthy, as was the IAT off the intake manifold, which I subsequently relocated to the intake tube instead. I also noticed my injectors had a lot of deposits built up around the exterior so I cleaned them as well. Buttoned it all back up and no more stalling, idle problems or oil consumption.

When my 98 318 dakota did that exact same thing, the MAP or manifold air pressure sensor was the problem. It's basically a vaccuum guage for the engine. It's on the firewall and has two or three vaccuum lines going to it. I'd go count them to be sure but my dakota now resides in a salvage yard :( Anyway, I can check Monday at work for a test procedure for that MAP sensor, so you can check it to be sure it's bad before you buy one - I think I paid around 60 bucks for one.

I cleaned my TB this weekend, and replaced the TPS, so far it hasn't given me any more problems, and as far as more throttle response goes, maybe some, whether it was the tps, or just a tb needing to be cleaned, i dont know, but doin both didnt do anything but help, ttyl, thank y'all for your help.
I completely removed the tb, linkage, and all sensors, and sprayed it heavely with STP Throttle Body cleaner, it worked really good, then i just wiped it off with a red shop rag, pretty simple and easy task, and just seems to make the engine perform better, i would recommend this to anyone with a high milage dak, or as just regular maintainence.
