Subject: Pinion Bearings? Help? IP: Logged
Message: Anyone replace just the pinions bearings?
Does the differential have shims on the inner axel bearings? Any trick on how to remove the differential gears? It’s pretty snug!
Does anyone know the torque spec for the Nut that holds the yoke on the pinion shaft, also the torque spec for the bolts that hold the caps on the inner axel bearings?
Thanks
Marcus

Message: if its in there tight, you're probably going to need a case spreader, its kinda like a square frame with to adjusters that force apart the casing of the axle housing. its kinda rare and expensive, for a one time use item, though.
I dunno about other people, but whenever I deal with bearing in the rear, If I have it apart, I replace them. its a bitc# when you get it all back together and end up finding out the bearing is messed up. for the expense of the bearings, I'd rather do it all at the same time, but from a diagnostic standpoint, if they appear fine, work fine, then you should be able to use them again.
as far as the torque, an easy way the check it is from the break away torque ( sorry I dont have the exact numbers, dodge dealerships should be able to provide it) break away is the amount of torque it takes to finally bust it loose. somewhat accuarate method, but be sure you use a bar type torque wrench, not the click type, they aren't as accurate as the bar style.
