Subject: Suggestion on 4.7 Upgrade

I have been a proud owner of a 03 4.7L cc dak. I'm looking for some suggestion on upgrading my engine. Not, looking at a supercharger. Just simple performance upgrade.

One of the best upgrades is a switch to the HO cams - most of the torque gain of the HO package just by swapping theese.

Ho cams works great. The Ho manifold helps in the upper RPM dept. A fastman true 68mm throttle body will bring everything together. I also have a true flow intake. It maintains the factory air box, but replaces the factory air hat with a 4" tube. The factory paper filter is replaced by a high flow foam filter. I also had a magnaflow muffler welded in to replace the stock one. 4.10 gears and an auburn posi do wonders for acceleration. My gas mileage also improved. I had the 3.55 before.

Which cams would be better the Mopar HO cams or the KRC 4.7/200's ? How would the KRC cams do with the Mopar HO intake manifold? I would like to keep as much bottom end torque as possible.

They are the same cams. For the most bottome end, only do the cams. The manifold does make the upper rpm's more fun.

I was going to check the specs on the KRC 200, but I didn't see them on their site. It only says "description unavailable". It's hard to give an opinion without knowing more. If you don't have any other modifications, it won't make a huge difference to put in a new cam. Whatever the cam, I'm sure you're putting it in to get more into the cylinders. In order to do this, you'll need to get a better intake and exhaust (to get the burnt stuff out). A cam never hurts, but the "low-end" is a function of many more things than just a cam. Do some research on what the best "bang-for-your-buck" will be.
Check out SpeedCrafter for some good information.
Good luck!

The first mods i did to my truck were the HO cams and intake manifold. With no other mods it did make a noticable difference. The HO cams are for low and mid range RPM. You do not have to put on an air intake or exhaust. The HO jeep does not have any kind of special intake or exhaust.

I agree that making a cam mod with an intake manifold upgrade would be noticeable. In fact, I'm looking to make the same change myself (along with exhaust). I was just making the comment to make the OP aware of other changes that need to be made along with a cam change. I've seen a bunch of posts from people disappointed in their cam investment.
Thanks for posting the specs. I was just curious since I've been in the market for a cam myself. The duration should help it to remain streetable and the overlap will probably broaden the rpm range of the engine. The power output at any given RPM will probably be reduced somewhat, but it's a good compromise while remaining streetable. I'd expect a larger gain in HP in higher RPMs just because of the lift, but it'll be a good overall increase.
Just my .02

The intake manifolds are identical on the 4.7L and the 4.7L HO-SAME part numbers! 53013403AC for engine code EVO. EVA=4.7L, EVC=HO & EVO=all. Do not waste your money buying this intake. The performance gains in the HO are from better flowing heads, camshafts, 9.7:1 compression pistons(9.0:1 normally) and different pcm calibration.

There are two different HO manifolds. There is one from 2002 and one from 2003-04. The 03/04 is the one you want.

Android - thanks for backing me up. I stand by my original statement. You don't need other mods to see the torque gain of the HO cams.
Another very good mod for the 4.7 is a PCM flash for more spark advance. You would have to send your PCM off to be flashed though, some downtime unless you can come up with a spare.

Yup Kowalski, i noticed a jump in performance with just the manifold and cams. When i did the air intake, throttle body, and exhaust, i also noticed a performance increas. But, i did not notice as much of an increase in power with these three mods, as when i just did the cams and manifold alone.

About the PCM upgrade, take a look at your PCM. Does it have four plugs or three? If it has four plugs, then like my 2003 we are out of luck. Some 2003 PCM's had the three plug design. Hopefully the superchips will be out soon. But who knows.

If you have an 03' you might want to ckeck the part # on the manifold. On mine it came from the factory with the HO manifold and I did my cams last week. Greatest mod yet.

airade intake, gibson cat back 3", throtle body spacer, HO cams and manifold.

I'm sorry Paul I have never seen or heard of a 4 plug PCM with only 3 of them plugged in. To the best of my knowledge all four plug PCM's cannot be flashed. This might be a good question to ask of a dodge techs on www.dodgetrucks.org He goes by the name CW. He is a moderator in the 3.7/4.7/5.7/8.3 board. You can send a message directly to him. I'll see if he can answer my question. I'm also gonna call Kenne Bell about it. They list the Optimizer to be available for the 03' 4.7. They don't specify different PCMs. And no I'm not pullin your chain. My PCM has four plug holes (if you will) and only 3 plugs. I'll let you guys now.

Paul do you have the 5 speed manual or an Auto. I think the 4th plug space is for the Auto (TCM) part of the PCM, they did away with a seperate control module in '03 I'm sure.

I'm pretty sure Kenne Bell can flash it. But before you send it in be sure to call them like it says on their site. It was a good thing for my '02 4.7L. I would get the Optimizer II again.

Later,
