Subject: Oil Pump Replacement IP: Logged
Message: Just replaced my oil pump on my 5.2 it sat for about a week with no pump or pan on, so the oil completely drained out of the system..now after re-install the rockers are being a little noisy..i only ran it for about 20 seconds, and they didn't quiet down. Normal? or should i pop the valve covers and pour some oil on the rockers till the oil system "catches up"

Message: Do you have oil pressure? Is there oil getting to the rockers?
The oil pump must be primed. A new pump usually comes packed with grease, which should start the pump working within just a few seconds. Did you happen to notice if yours was?
The oil pump is driven off the end of the distributer shaft. It's a simple straight blade affair, just like a screwdriver. I believe Chevy is the same design. I've never done it on a Dodge, but on Ford and Chevy you use a priming tool in a drill motor, and run the pump for a while until oil gets to the rocker arms.
You have to remove the distributer to do this. Be very carefull how you do this. You don't say what year you have. But on modern computer controlled engines the distributer does not control ignition timing, it controls the fuel injection pulse via the camshaft position sensor. Be sure and read the manual carefully before removing it.

Message: Is there anyway that the timig chain being off/streached to cause noisy rockers?...I'm really stumped as to why the would be so noisy after changing the timing chain and the oil pump out.

Message: Here's a hypothysis. I believe the 5.2 uses hydralic lifters. Having the engine sit open for a week could have drained them down and when you started the engine with the new pump, the seals in one or more lifter failed (no old oil, it drained out & no new oil while the new pump picked up it's prime. A collapsed lifter will make a lot of noise via loosening the entire pushrod/rocker train. Even 20 or 30 seconds with no oil can kill a lifter. At a 600 RPM idle, a lifter would actuate approxamatly 150 times in 30 seconds. Not good news but simply pulling the valve covers & checking the rocker arm free play will tell you if & which pushrod /rocker train is loose. A magnetic probe can often be used to pull a lifter out of it's bore to check to see if it's collapsed. If the pushrod seat isn't tight up against the lifter top, it's collapsed & must be replaced... Oh, If one or two are bad, resist the urge to replace one or two. Lifters are best replaced as a set. I hope I'm wrong for your wallet's sake.
