PS..

Ok, I need a little help here. Does anyone know for sure that if
your dak r/t a 2002 model burnes out its computer at 15,000
miles ((covered under warantee)) the first time. And than burnes
it out again 8,000 miles later,Now they DONT want to cover it
under warantee. They say that due to the mods- such as Airaid
intake, moved IAT sensor, 1.7 roller rockers, thats why the
computer burn't out and now I have to pay
for the computer and labor?. Note that all this was on the truck
the first time when the same dealer waranteed the first
computer. Now
the truck is in the shop as we speak I'm not sure what I should
do. Please HELP :(

You have no chance in hell in beating a lightning with those mods, you need like a supercharger and much more. That lightning will run a 13.9 sec 1/4 mile with anyone behind the wheel and with a pro 13.6. With the mods you got and if you are a good driver, breaking into the 14 sec range would be a task. Not to dis your R/T, but common, it's a lightning. Can you say 390 hp and 440 ft.lbs of torque.

Lee- the dealer should come good, but may guess is you have something else causing the burnt computer, bad ground or a power surge.

if that dealer does,nt want to do it try a different dealer or call the regienal office

good luck

Without the Flux Capacitor and Dielithioum Crystals under the hood, you might as well just mail him your pink slip and save yourself the embarasment of poping the power plant.

Sweet Jesus! Now the 99 & up Lightnings aren't that fast? Any truck that can run high 13's and top off at over 140mph is fast. Sorry, unless someone mods a R/T substantially, you wouldn't beat the Lightning. The R/T in question is w/o a doubt well into the 14's but still, it's outgunned. How anyone can say the Lightning isn't that fast, is beyond me.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but i have a "Can I Win" question as well...

First off, i have an 00 cc 4x4 4.7L auto with 3:55 LSD. Its stock, except a dynomax super turbo and TPS adjusted to .76. This guy i know swears up and down that his 98 4 door suburban (completely bone stock 5.7L 2 wheel drive auto) will hand my Dakota its ass..

. i have no experience with suburbans, and want to know if i stand a chance... i mostly want to shut him up, he’s one of those bragging type of guys. He laughed when i told him it’s a 4.7L v8! I guess he's uneducated on the new OHC engines, they put out good HP from a LOT less cubes...

I personally think I would smoke him, because he should weigh about 500 lbs more than me. The 350 in 98 probably has about as much HP as my 4.7L, but the 4.7L revs high and is pretty “snappy”… I just wanted everyone’s .02

Dan - he's not going to hand you your ass, so just run him and find out. If you win, you get to laugh at him; if you loose, no big deal, you're giving him a full liter advantage in displacement.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

A. There was no 1998 Lightning. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the redesigned s/c Lightning come out for 99?

B. Magazine drivers were even able to click off high 13's in this truck so what could an experienced owner do behind the wheel? Who can forget the issue of MT when they compared a Lightning, MGT, Z28, TA and the R/T? I don't think I have to remind you of how the R/T stacked up against the Lightning, do I?

Vern,

No offense but you sound as if you haven't a clue when it comes to a Lightning. If you did, you would damn well know they are a great performing truck and would lay waste to just about any R/T short of one with significant mods. Regardless if it is a Ford, pull your head out of your arse and give it credit. According to some people on this site, all it takes to beat a Lightning with a R/T is intake and exhaust. Some people truely have no clue!

well last time i went to the track it was about 85 degrees and very humid and i still managed a 14.6 in the quarter and that was before the 3 inch exhaust which really seemed to help out the overall power of the truck. and at the track that day i was running the same numbers as new mach 1 mustangs and better numbers than 5.0 mustangs. but anyway i should have the M1 manifold installed by the time i race him so it should be close. and i donno if were gonna bet anything or not but def not pink slips cause im not gonna take that risk. plus both of us are only 20 so we need our trucks daily.... they arent sunday cars.

I'm telling you, you should beat him. 99 was the first year that they supercharged the Lightnings and they really didn't start to get that fast until 2001. you should beat him no contest.

I have another question for you all. I own a '99 dakota rt and have changed a few mods. Was wondering how I would do against the lightning. So far I have changed to: Gibson headers with 2 super 40 series flowmaster mufflers with 3inch exhaust, the programmer, bigger cam, throatal body spacer, and a powerdyne supercharger. Just wanted to know if you guys had any idea what i could run.

RC or CC?

If RC, I would say mid-high 13's easy, course, that depends on what PSI you're running. A stock RC R/T will run high 14's if I remember correctly. Superchargers on these trucks will drop you anywhere from, say, .7/.8 to 1.5 secs (1.5 being pretty drastic), but average I think is around 1 second. That alone should get you high 13's to a 14.0. Programmer will drop you another .2-.5 depending on what it is. TB Spacer is crap, doesn't do anything on Magnum motors. How much of a bigger cam? Gains here could be zilch to .2-.3 secs I would guess, I haven't seen any real numbers on gains from bigger cam (meaning, I haven't seen anyone change just a cam and give resulting gains). With those mods, and properly tuned, you could *possibly* drop into the low 13's. The 98 lightning you would chew up easily. The newer lightnings will run mid-high 13's, so they could be a real challenge. I also see a lot of these lightnings running 12's because it's real cheap to get them there, lot easier then with an R/T.

Almost forgot, if you have a CC R/T, tack on .5 secs to the initial 1/4 mile time, so about 15.2-15.4 1/4 on a CC R/T

hey thanks for the reply. we have a few of the new lightnings in town so i plan on racing them to find out how i stand to see what i have to change. i dont have much time left because i have to go back to iraq for another 6 months im on leave right now for 2 weeks. i did race the mustang today and that thing runs like crap because i beat him by about 7 car lenghs on a street light race. damn i was disappointed in that car. i dont think my supercharger is puttin out all the power it can so were going to put a smaller belt on it to see if it will give it a little more. im pretty happy with how its running. thanks again for the reply. I'm not gonna make a prediction on this. But if I were you Joey, I'd race him anyhow. What's the worst that'll happen? You lose the race? At least you where you stand then. That Lightning's supercharged, but I'd say go for it. We all know Dodge is the man.

yea im gonna go for it. i almost had a chance to race one today at a stoplight but there were cars in front of us and the lightning got stuck in the left lane traffic. the driver made no effort to try and catch up for a race even though i slowed down to 25 mph for a few minutes. and eventually i couldnt see it anymore. oh well cant hold up traffic right. i was kinda pissed though. ill let u guys know how it turns out in about 2 weeks or so as long as my M1 install goes ok.
