I just got to thinking... some of us complain of craptacular gas mileage... i mean come on, we dont buy these to be good on gas but a friggin new F150 can get dang near 20mpg on the interstate... i hit 15mpg this last weekend going to KC...
i average about 10-11 in town, but im thinking our gas mileage is in direct correspondence to the rear end gears we have...
everyone if you could list your averages and what gearing you have in the rear and if its a posi and 4x4 or not that would be awesome....
mine -
99 4x4 10-11 in town 14-15 highway
Posi Rear end w/ 3.55 gears....

Ross,
I bought my 2004 Dakota 4.7 4X4 RC Manual 3.55 Anti-Spin Jan 04. Here is a link http://www.smallwebs.biz/mileage.htm to my table of the gas mileage since purchased. It is within 2 mpg of the 2002 4cyl 4x4 Tacoma that I traded in. The Tacoma was a very good truck, but this Dakota is awesome.

I have a 99 cc 5.2L 4X4 355 lsd rear just towed from rhode island to pennsylvania and got 10-12 towing but after driving from heshey to gettysberg and back i got 18.3 mpg this was the best i have ever seen previous best was 15.

i relocated the iat, replacement k&n filter synthetic diff.fluid ,recent trans fluid and filter change,and band adjustment.and replaced the spark plugs with the recomended "cooler heat range".I just got back on saturday and just filled up today half the tank was used while towing then refilled at 1/8th and I got 13mpg.

'97 4x4 Sport 5.2L, 3.92LSD, and all the cooling options/upgrades, completely stock. I rarely reset my trip computer so I know that over the course of thousands of miles my average is only about 13mpg. The last time I checked it over the course of a long trip (6 hour drive - all highway) I was happy to see 18mpg.
I do a lot of towing, so the 13 doesn't surprise me.

see, thats what i was wondering...
people im seeing with the 3.92 gears see higher mpg averages.. the 3.55s suck a bit more gas.
whats the diffrence in acceleration and speed?

I have the '03 QC with the 3.55 rear and I get 15-18 mpg in 'normal' driving (either city or highway at 75). When I drive on the highway at 70, I can get over 20 mpg (as high as 21.5 mpg). I didn't think that 5 mph would make that much of a difference, but I just took a long trip and at 75, I get 15-18 mpg, while at 70, I get 20-21 mpg. Same truck, same day (different states, however, maybe different gas formulations?).
I thought it was the 3.92 that used a bit more gas (than the 3.55).
