I have been thinking about an exhaust lately.
It's just the money that hurts the subject. Everything is too
expensive for me now. I can't afford to buy a $300 exhaust system
and then pay extra for installment and stuff. I've been looking on
ebay and they have the sytems with the flowmaster mufflers for like
$120, with their own tubing or something. Are these just a hoax?
Or would this still be better than the stock system that is on my '97
5.2 now? Just wonderin'.

There are exhaust SYSTEMS, ie direct fit applications custom fit to go on your truck with little or no modifications that should include at minimum a muffler and pipes, and sometimes a performance cat in addition.

Then there are mufflers that are sold with exhaust tubing that you would have to bend and modify to create your own custom system.

The cheapest flowmaster SYSTEMS I can find on ebay go for about 200$. Not sure what you saw, but I'd say 120 is a bit too low and my bet is you can expect to pay 1-200 bucks bucks or even more for a shop to make it fit.

So look for a 200-250$ complete direct fit kit for your application and then expect to pay 50-70$ for a good shop to take 45 minutes to an hour to install it and weld it in.

Or... if you want a stealth look, looking like it's stock then rattling windows unexpectedly when you pull away, replace the stock muffler but leave the factory pipes in tact since most of the restriction is in the muffler itself anyway.

Id try to sell you on stainless steel magnaflow but mine was a nearly 600 dollar system and you said you're not looking to spend that much so I'll keep my mouth shut.

By the way just a muffler replacement would be less than 150$ including labor.

I just bought a 2002 dodge dakota SLT extended cab 4x4 about 2 weeks ago. The previous owner put the tow package and a few other goodies like the 16in wheels on it. I just had the exhaust done today. I got the flowmaster 40 series. Got the stainless steel pipes and 3in tips put on for 436.63. I had this done at the Midas shop. I got a really good discount because the manager of the shop drives a 2001 Dakota Sport. He had the exact same set up on his. So I got the chance to hear the system before I purchased it. It's not to loud but not really quiet either. Has an awsome idle rumble. I would reccomend this if you don't want to loud but not to quiet deep rumble sound. Also noticed better acceleration.

Nate,

So THAT's what $436 sounds like huh?

You want to believe it now accellerates better, but a before and after dyno would disagree with you.

BTW, That was a good deal? Is this for the Y pipe, true duals, etc? That will dyno a gain.
For that price, it must have been the Y and true duals, right?

Yes it was the true duals. I forgot to mention that the acceleration was after the K&N FIPK kit I put on. I think it was a good deal STAINLESS STEEL PIPES.
