Subject: Ticking noise in my 5.9L
IP: Logged

Message:
OK guys so I took my '01 Quad Cab 5.9L to the dealership for a ticking noise coming from the engine. It's not overwhelming but VERY annoying. It sounds a lot like lifter noise to me. Well anyway the dealership says it is INJECTOR noise and ALL the 5.9L Dakotas do it. They say they get lots of complaints but that it is just a characteristic of the motor. Is this true or is the guy just blowing smoke up my *ss to get me to go away? Please help.

Thanks!

Kerry

I don't know if the dealer is blowing smoke or not, but anytime I get the "it's normal" answer, here's what I do. Call their bluff. Tell them that you'll believe it's normal if they walk out to the new vehicle lot with you and show you that all the 5.9's do it. Have them to start all of them to prove it to you. You'll either be shown that all of them do it, or you'll prove your point that it is not normal.

Mine does it too, as did my '92 F150's 5.0L. I originally thought it to be lifter noise too but after a little investigating found it to be the injectors.

Louder exhaust to compensate ... worked for me! ;o)

Do the "stethoscope" test. Take an old piece of garden hose and hack off about 3 feet of it. Hold one end to your ear and probe around your valve covers with the other end. Anyway, in my case there was no lifter noise. That was proof enuff for me.

There's an old indian trick for ya! hehehe

Thanks to both of you. I think I will drop by the dealership and see if they have and 5.9L QC's in stock. They usually just carry the 4.7L models.

My 5.9 only ticks for a few seconds at startup in morning. After that its smooth and doesnt make a sound.

There is a slight ticking noise that you can hear if you really strain but that sounds normal and it is nothing i would think wasnt.

You have to give us a better discription of the ticking. How loud is it how fast does it repeat it self.

Kerry,
My 2000 QC 5.9L 4x4 does it too. Does it sound like it is right behind the stereo/ dash? This is where my ticking sound comes from. I do believe it's the injectors. I have a new cap, rotor, wires, plugs, etc., and it still does it. I thought it was crossfire at first, but I rerouted the wires according to the TSB, and it still does it. No exhaust leaks or anything: I'm pretty sure it is the injectors. That noise bugs the crap out of me, though. Oh well!!!

Ya the noise is about the same place you are talking about. I will be bring the truck back in to the dealer next Tuesday for some other work so I will check the brand new ones they have at the dealership. Oh, has anyone heard some really loud compressor kicking on and off constantly when you turn the vent fans on?

Kerry you did not buy a mercedies were quiet is expected.

YOU BOUGHT A TRUCK not a Chevy imitation truck BUT A TRUCK. Its going to be a little crud. You just got to realise that dodge stuff may not be the quietest smoothest user friendly stuff in the world. But it can take the test of time and can be put under a lot of load.

When the compresser turns on in my truck it make a loud tick and then you can hear it spin. The tick isnt like ruin your eardrums loud its just noticable at idle with radio of.

Then you are hearing something different. Mine is so loud I actually have to turn the radio up to drown it out. :) BTW, I have been very happy with my truck. It drives like a dream and pulls my jeep and trailer, or my 3 horse slant bumper pull trailer through the mountain passes just fine. But I just have a few little things that have "changed" since I bought it and would like to keep it running nice. Trust me, I know trucks, this isn't my first one. There is a reason why I am driving a dodge now. My dad owned fords and I will NEVER buy a ford.

Kerry,
Mine makes a compressor sound, as well. I also turn on the radio, so I don't have to hear it. When my defroster is on, the compressor and relay click on and off constantly. The compressor doesn't bother me as bad as the relay does. It sounds like it is on the transmission hump, under the stereo, and in front of the console (bucket seats) and transfer case shifter. Does this sound like your noise, as well???

Yup that sounds about right. But honestly the only reason it bothers me so much is that I KNOW it was not this loud when I bought the thing. Bait and switch. ;)

My 4.7L does this as well. I know others on here with 4.7's have talked about this too. I have been convinced that it isn't the lifters. But sure doesn't give me a warm-fuzzy about truck. If it's a noise the engine(s) just make, you would think they could muffle it somehow.

Kerry yesterday just for you i went outside and fired up the 5.9 cost me $4.00 in gas. Anyway there is absolutly no ticking noise what so ever. It is smooth and quiet. Compresser makes noise but there is no ticking from injectors or anything.

Opened the hood with engine running and still could not hear any. Either im very lucky or my injectors are all broken.

Hmmm, durtydog ... hadn't heard of the screwdriver thing, like the comment about "screw loose"! hehehe

CDak, it's a Westin safari bar. I bought mine from autobarn.com. Not the best thing in the world. I'll be replacing mine with some sort of aftermarket bumper when one catches my eye. Safari bar serves it's purpose (place to mount lights) but doesn't protect the lights at all and wouldn't offer much in the line of front end protection either.

I have a '99 Daksport CC stock V8 5.2L engine. I've had 4 people look and listen to the ticking sound coming from the engine. Been told that it is likely a lifter. Cold startup I hear some clicking deeper in the engine that goes away in a few seconds. There is no clicking from the lifters until the engine warms up or I drive about 2-3 minutes. Oil pressure is just fine and I only have 50K miles on it. Any ideas on what I can do to get rid of the annoying lifter noise?? I run 87 octane and have for 3 years with no problems whatsoever. Change oil every 3K too.

i have a 92' Dak LE with a 3.9L V6... yes the magnum motor... it must be something with the magnums... mine ticks and sounds like a friggin diesel motor... i originally thought it was the lifters/valves but after i put some oil detergent in there thats made to quiet lifters and valves, it didnt stop...

Im guessing its the same thing- the fuel injectors. do any of you guys have a problem with running at a super low idle, then having the truck die when your turing a corner or something just before you accelerate?
