Subject: idle up and down at start up 4.7 L IP: Logged
Message: Hi all, I have a 2000 dakota quad cab, sometimes at start up (more frequently these days) idles up and down when starting. It is like I am sitting there pumping the gas pedal. Can go from 650 rpm to over 1000 rpm and back down..sometimes stops right away sometimes lasts awhile. I am thinking TPS or idle air or something. My previous truck, a ram did the same..but different engine.

Message: Could be the idle air controller, could also be a dirty throttle body, what I've found is that if you spray a little carb/throttle body cleaner into the intake manifold it can really help out the idle.

Message: My 97 Dak did the same thing. I checked the TPS with an OBD computer and found that it was spiking in the idle position. The output varied from 14% (normal closed throttle) to 30% w/o moving the pedal. I replaced the TPS and all is fine now.

Message: Probably the IAC sensor.
When looking at the drivers side of the throttle body (top center of engine with square air hat mounted on front of it), there are 2 sensors on drivers side. One is gray the other is black. Both are held on with Torx screws.
(From SpeadTweaks)
How to Clean the IAC Solenoid:
This is recommended at every Tune-Up to prevent excess carbon buildup on the IAC plunger. In some cases, you'll notice a slightly erratic idle quality. This is the first step in taking care of that problem. IAC = Intake Air Control (Solenoid).
Example located in bottom right corner of pic.
Remove the Air Hat from the Throttle Body
Disconnect the sensor harness from the IAC Solenoid (Rear of Throttle Body)
Remove the two Torx-25 Screws
Remove the IAC Solenoid (Be careful not to lose the rubber O-Ring)
Spray some Carb/TB Cleaner in the IAC port on the Throttle Body and let it sit
Spray some Carb/TB Cleaner on the tip of the IAC Solenoid and wipe clean (Do NOT forcefully twist or push the plunger - You will damage the Solenoid. Wipe very gently.)
Spray a little bit more Carb/TB Cleaner in the IAC port on the Throttle Body and wipe clean with a thin/lint-free rag
Reinstall the IAC Solenoid (Make sure you don't lose the rubber gasket on the solenoid)
Reinstall the sensor connector and airhat
Start the engine and let idle for about 1 minute.

Message: I had the same problem with my '00 4.7L Dak. I checked the voltage at the TPS, .34v. Did the speedtweaks TPS adjustment to .74v and CAREFULLY cleaned the IAC. Had the pcm flashed. Strangely enough the idle dropped to around 500rpm and would occasionally jump around going as high as 1100rpm and so low that it would stall once in a while. So, I pulled the TB, popped the center pin out of the "security" Torx used to set the idle and turned the screw (Torx T-20 driver) one full turn clockwise. It now idles firmly at 700rpm and the stalling is all but gone.

Message: Thanks all that gives me a place to go with..I thought it would be along that lines as my other dodge did roughly the same thing. I wasn't sure because of the 4.7L engine as opposed to the 5.2L ram.
