Just made a home brew intake last Sunday. I followed the directions from,

http://modernmusclecars.net/articles/coldair/index.html

Best site I found for this!! I used a different breather filter than what they did. And I made a bracket from the toilet flange to the cruise control , uh , controler. I think that is what it is . Its round and sits on the passenger side. Anyway it keeps the intake from bouncing up and down like a yoyo!!

About how long untill I feel some real gains,I mean until the computer learns the new fuel/air mix? The mid range felt stronger almost immediately !!! Will it get better after a few more miles?

It does get better after the PCM learns the new settings. Did you reset the PCM? If you did, it would take about 50 miles. If you did not, it would take about 200 miles.

I did that to, in fact I used the same site. I used the same parts as the site listed. It was nice because there was no guessing if this or that would fit, I bought all the parts listed and everything worked out great.
I noticed a little more low end/mid range.
At first I went through a lot more gas, maybe because I couldn't keep my foot out of it, the sound is too awesome.
it's definitely a "must do" mod, especially for the price

I haven't checked. I only drive it on the weekends , she drives it to work. If I drive it to work , it gets all torn up! Well , extreamly dirty anyway. I only live 5 min. from work , and she only works about 3 min. Gotta love that!!

I just completed my home brew intake from the same link as above. I an SO impressed with how it turned out. It is a very clean looking application. I also had a Dynomax exhaust installed today. I had the 2 1/2 in/out muffler put in and it sounds excellent.

I am so happy with these two mods. The stock 4.7 in my QC already kicked a$$, now it just plain rocks.

If you get the chance to do these mods, GO FOR IT.

I am glad you guys like the site. Increasing performace on anything is important to me. I hope everyone continues to use it and gets good results.
On a side note I picked up a Mopar at the Auctions this weekend 135 bucks for a 1986 Chyrsler Lebaron GTS 2.2 Turbo!! Runs Awesome! Found receipts in it for a recent Headgasket and rebuilt turbo. It just needed some axles. I will be updating progress on it at Modernmusclecars.net.
Hopefully I'll have running low 14's high 13's by the end of summer.

I failed to mention in my post above how much fun I had at Home Depot looking for the parts.

I showed one of the employees there what I was building (had the instructions and pictures printed out) and he was going crazy. Helped me find every single piece. We were fitting it right there in the store. He was showing a few co-workers there the intake I was building out of toilet pieces !!!

He has a 95 Mustang and was going to look on the web for a home brew for that.

Shopping for the stuff was 1/2 the fun...

Thanks again for the great link...

What gains and losses will I get. I am going to do the "home-brew" version of the air intake this weekend.
What kind of HP should I expect to gain? What effect will this have on the MPG?

I live in St. Louis, MO and I have been to Home Depot, Lowes, and Henry's Plumbing Supply and I cannot find Black ABS Pipe ANYWHERE!!!! Everyone looks at me like I am some kind of retard when I ask for it. I found plenty of White PVC Pipe but no Black ABS. I ordered the K&N and got the other breather, adapter, and heater hose but cant find the MAIN INGREDIENT!! ANY HELP?!?!?!?

Well guys I have been making some phone calls and I have answered my own questions . . Black ABS Pipe is Illegal to use in St. Louis, St. Clair and most surrounding counties from where I live. THATS JUST ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!!!! Now what do I do? Will anyone go buy the ABS pipe, 90 degree elbows and the toilet flange that I need and send it to me???? I will pay shipping and whatever else I need. It still beats paying $200-$300 for a Cold Air Kit. Someone please help me. It will be much Appreciated!

I used PCV pipe because I couldn't find it either, and put primer on it, so far it hasn't melted. I just made sure it is high enough above the a/c lines. Granted it is only 72 degrees F but we'll see.

The worst was asking for the stuff and then you get the damn homo depot worker asking "well what are you going to be using it for?" Like I'm going to waste my time explaining what an intake is

BTW, I don't mean to offend anyone here that works at home depot,

I just got done insalling this set-up on my '02 4.7
I used the parts list on the site & followed the instructions & it was a snap! Took about 2 hours working in between rain showers in the driveway, including a lunch break. ;-)
Can't really tell if there's any performance gains yet since it's wet out & every time I stomped on it it just spun the tires.
Sounds the same at idle & cruising speed but really growls when your on the gas!
Thanks so much for the how-to! Very worthwhile & easy mod.

If you can't get ABS use PVC. Just make sure it is schedule 40 or schedule 80. All the fittings are the same in either PVC or ABS. One thing though, you wont find a schedule 80 closet flange.

Ahhhh.... The ABS dilema. It's the same thing here in Michigan. I was re-plumbing my kitchen sink and the old stuff was ABS. Couldn't find it anywhere.
One thing to remember... The glue actually melts the two pieces together thats why it sets up so fast. ABS and PVC will NOT glue (melt) together.
Don't try to use both ABS and PVC. If you need to use both ABS and PVC make sure you use a rubber fitting with hose clamps between the two.

The white PVC is actually better pipe, that's part of the reason most places don't sell it anymore. But who wants a stinkin' white intake??

Rough up the PVC pipe a little with fine sand paper and use a good spray paint (like Rustoleum) in flat black. Put a couple good coats on it. The heat in the engine compartment isn't so high that it will booger up the spray paint, and for extra protection you can fashion a heat shield and bolt or glue it to the pipe.
