Message:
Im getting ready to buy a new 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 qc 4x4 and im wanting to konw what the opinions are on diesel engines and on a gas engine, diesel is cheaper, and get a little bit better milage, but they are a nightmare to maintain from some people that i've talked to.. also i've heard that the new dodge hemi's are just as bad on gas as the 5.9 and with gas prices the way they are .. anyways, any info you guys have is appreciated

i'm no expert but, you never have to worry about a dist.cap, rotor, plugs or wires with a diesel.
depends what you're using the truck for.

you'll probably find your answers here -

I'd get the diesel. The newer ones are quieter and more fuel efficient. They utilize common rail fuel injection whch allows them to be a bit cleaner as well. The few people I know that own diesels love them. My coworker has a model similiar to the one you're looking at except its a club cab. A friend of mine's dad has a chevy diesel. He loves his too. He gets well over 20mpg and hasn't had any problems. The guy I bought my r/t rims has a diesel dually and gets better mpg than the r/t he owned (20mpg+)!!

I'd look into how the change in sulfur content (from 300ppm to 15ppm) content will effect a current diesel motor. This takes effect 2006. Like how it might need to be modified or somethin like that (if at all). The guys at banks could probably help you with those questions.

If I had had the money for a cummins diesel Ram when I was buying my RT I probably wouldn't own an RT, although I'd like to have both the Diesel is one remarkable engine.

Go with the diesel if you’re looking for economy. In a heavy vehicle, the diesel will get up to 50% or more unloaded fuel mileage. The only maintenance on a diesel, is regular oil and filter changes and occasional air and fuel filters. Oil changes are a must and the diesel capacity is twice as much.

The diesel gets much better ecnomy, and has gobs of torque. But initial purchase price is considerably higher, and maint is higher. Just look at the cost of an oil change. Although I can't say for sure, I expect insurance is more expensive, too.

You'll save money on fuel costs because of the better mileage and decreased cost per gallon. But the break even point ends up being around 80,000-100,000 miles.

However, if you do a lot of heavy hauling and towing, the diesel ends up being more economical and more capable. There the break even point ends up being 25,000-35,000 miles.

Until they produce and sell a mid sized truck with a small diesel, the choice is really pretty simple. If you tow, get diesel. If not, get gas.
