Subject: Pre Cats IP: Logged
Message: I have an 04 QC with the 4.7/5 speed auto. Went to a muffler shop the other day to get a quote. I asked about a catback system he looked under the truck and said that I didn't have a single cat, but 2 precats and that he could do a true dual system for me. I looked under the truck as well and didn't see a single cat either. Does anybody know if this is "legal" or not. Or is this the "new" way of doing cats on trucks. Bought the truck new. BTW the precats are small. maybe 5-8 inchs long and not much bigger than the exhaust pipe themselves. Have any ideas

Message: 3 cats came standard on the '01's and higher. You should have 2 precats and a single cat. The precats are integrated into your y-pipe. The single cat is after the y-pipe. Gsmotorsports.com sells a tru-dual system for the 4.7L. Unless your guy can do it cheaper than their prices.
The pre cats aren't that restrictive but they are converters none the less. The third cat is suppoed to be the most restrictive. This is of course something has changed on the '04's.

Message: Yeah I got lucky with my '00. It's only got one! It's soon to be a 3" Carsound up from a 2.5" Carsound if I can get some straight answers and a decent exhaust builder here in Ft. Myers.

Message: Use GS Motorsports at your own risk.
They have owed me a $200 refund check for 2 months, the true dual system didn't fit my 2001 4.7L V8, and they are very difficult to get a hold of. In short their true dual system cost me over $1,000 to get done correctly.
I started with 3 cats. I relocated the 3rd cat to my garage floor first and replaced it with a straight pipe. It leaked. I graduated to getting the true dual from GS Motorsports and it sounds nice, passes emissions, and looks cool. Good luck!

Message: Mine came with 3 cats in the beginning. All I did was come off the pre-cats with 2.5" pipe and ran true duals back out the passenger side (between the frame and the drive shaft) and added a couple real short glass packs (like one is 10" and one is 12") and then made a nice 'Y' into a full 3" pipe that dumps behind the roll pan. Eliminating the 3rd cat all together. I still pass emissions with flying colors and I picked up 3/10ths in the 1/4 mile like this. I can't tell you what this would cost, because and old freind that owns a muffler shop in Louisiana did it for me and has refused to take money from me since we were teenagers. So it was free.
