Subject: '92 5.2 Wont Restart
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '92 dak with the 5.2 everything stock except single 3" exhaust and it just started this problem at 140,000. I can take it for a short or long drive(doesnt really matter) and it will run just fine. Shut it off and try to restart and it will just crank till the cows come home. Checked for spark and fuel to injectors while it was doing this and had both. Waited about an hour and still wont start but when left overnight it will start just fine and drive fine but do the same thing again after driving. Has happened twice now. Any ideas?

Might be the fuel pump or filter. The filter is a cheap fix, as it is inline on the drivers side framerail.

Dan,
You can prove if it is fuel related by giving it a splash "1 ounce" of gas in the intake the next time it happens. If it fires and runs or tries to run, it is fuel related.

Dan ... one of most common problem source is from the wiring harness under the fuse box in the engine bay.

Right below the underhood fusebox, about 8" down the harness is a splice (#115), from that splice, it powers the PCM, Fuel Pump, and Coil. All four wires are Red/white, one comes from the fusebox, two go right back up to the relays, and the fourth goes the opposite direction to the PCM. You will have to unbolt the fusebox, pull it out of the way, and cut open the tape on the harness to find the splice.

What happens is that water gets into the fusebox, drains down the harness, and eventually corrodes the splice into green powder (oxidized copper). You cannot tell if it is bad by looking at it, you will have to cut the tape off of the splice and inspect the connection. If you see and green or white residue on the connection under the tape, it has started to go bad and needs to be re-done (preferably by soldering).

This problem can be very intermittent, sometimes just a single miss while cruising down the highway, sometimes just a long cranking time, sometimes even sensitive to temperature (28-40F) and high humidity. The problem in a friend's 94 Dak occurred intermittently 30+ times and over $1000 in parts over a year. Finally one day it just died in Toledo.

I would check all grounds in that area first as that is easier. If grounds are good, then get a voltage reading at the PCM. If none, cut the harness to get a better look.

An owner with a 93 Dak also had the exact same problems. Chances are good if you ever drove in the rain, yours has already started corroding. HTH.

Ok, it did it again today, Dodge Dakota V-8, 5.2 won't restart after sitting for 30 minutes. I took the air filter off, and hit it with a shot of starter fluid and it tried to restart. Therefore I think it is a fuel supply problem. I disconnected the computer and tried again, same result, tried to start. Reconnected the computer and no change in the result, I was hoping disconnecting the computer would reset it, but not happening. Any other suggestions?

Did you read what ticats and Carmen wrote? You're going to have to do some serious troubleshooting. I don't think the problem's going to wave at you, you're going to have to hunt it down and fix it.

its a fuel system problem. if it was electical, it would happen any time, not just when you shut it off, and it wouldnt start up only when letting it wait for many hours. and when shooting starter fluid in the t-body, it wouldnt try to start up if it was electical either. unless of course if it was a fuel pump electrical problem, but i doubt that.

jayb, did you read all of the comments in this thread or just skim over them before leaving your 2 cents? The 3 wire splice near the underhood fuse box is a common problem and has been documented in many threads on this forum. I also saw a thread that said the problem turned out to be a heat-sensitive problem with the PCM connections. Once the truck sat for a while, it would start up and run fine.
Considering that many systems are electronically controlled, what kind of "non-electrical" problems did you think were causing his symptoms? If you're going to discount anyones suggestions, you might want to offer some countering fixes yourself.
Don't tell someone that they have a bad idea if you don't have any ideas yourself.

I have this same issue. But I get shocked when I get out of the
truck, but only on the driver side. I've checked for loose or
broken wires, bad fuses, I've replaced crank position sensor,
distributor cap, plugs and wires, tested my injectors and coil, I
haven't found a fix for this yet. Any help?
