Subject: 3.9L V6 to 5.2L V8 IP: Logged
Message: I want to buy a 5.2L V8 5 speed, but it is hard to find one in my price range(under $10,000). I was wondering if it is worth it to buy a V6 and change it for a V8. also how long does it take? and is it more worth it to put mods on the V6? for the money that is.

Message: You would end up spending a lot more money if you bought a v6 and swapped to a v8, than if you just bought a v8. Also, I have seen a couple of sixer's whoop a v8 after some serious mods, so what you decide on is your call.

Message: As far as I know, the mods are basically the same price, and SpeedTweaks has a bunch of stuff you can do to a v6. Though, there are WAY more parts for a v8, but some of the parts are interchangeable between v6 and v8.

Message: well the torque and horsepower gains for the money are prolly gonna be better with the v8. A highly modified v6 won't beat a highly modified v8. I would (if you got the cash) invest in the v8 personally. Hell, I used to have a 4 banger dakota that I had nitrous on, but it still would only hang with a v6 and not really beat it. Then i bought the beast I have now.
To put it in another way, if you spent $300 on mods for your v6 and added 20 horses it would give you right around 195 hp.
If you took the same $300 and bought roughly the same mods for the 5.2 v8 you would around 250 hp.
Now the 2 trucks weigh roughly the same, let's just say 4000 lbs. for sh!ts and giggles (if they were both the same body styles, give or take 100 pounds). now if you divided the weight of the v6 by it's hp, you would get around a 1 hp for every 20 pounds. The 5.2 v8 is around 1 hp for every 16 pounds.
So dollar for dollar, the v8 will win.

Message: ok thanx for your help. now all i have to do is find a 5 speed V8. But ive been looking around for a little while and ive found that they are about 10,000 - 15,000 which is a little high. thats why i was going for the V6 but now that i think about they ended up about the same price. just easier to find.

Message: It is kinda tough finding used v8's cause nobody really gives up a good thing ;) but I am sure one will turn up. If you go to a Dodge Dealership, usually the sales guys will look around for you if you tell them what you want. Also, look for a Regular cab cause those will be ALOT cheaper than a Club Cab.
Glad to help!!

Message: It is possible, but again, you would spend alot of money and time swapping. The 5 speed manual is cheaper than an automatic anyways....

Message: You guys sound like you know your stuff for the upgrade...give me an opinion will ya.
I currently have a 4x4 2000 regular cab with the 3.9. Not many engine/exhaust mods as it is my primary commuter vehicle. I want more power, more speed, you name it.
As I am getting a car the dakota can now be my toy. I have replaced engines for oem replacements in other vehicles but haven't done extensive engine upgrades (like cramming a 350 small block into an S10). I am hopeful that a 5.2 dakota upgrade from the 3.9 will be relatively easy.
Comments on this? Upgrade the engine, or just mod out my 3.9...
Thanks!
