Message: Well lastnight I was doing a little friday night cruising in my 01 Dakota R/T. There is this guy that has a 99 Lightning in my town and he started trying to mess with me. We caught a red light he put his in neutral and started reving it up, I just looked over at him and laughted, I held the gas to about 2000rpm it turned green I hit 70 and was about 2 trucks infront of him. What is wrong with that pile of Ford? He wanted to race from about 50-on he kicked down first, supercharger winding, I still beat him pretty bad. Either my truck is a beast with on K&N cold air intake and dual flowmast exhaust or his truck is just a turd. I figured all of you would just like to hear a nice fresh road kill story!

Message: A CAI and flowmaster exhaust are the only things you have on your truck and your beating Lightnings? I could see the race from a stop happening if he had no clue how to drive but a race from 50mph? All he needs to do is press the gas and your a distant memory.

Message: yeah this is a 99, they changed the gears on the lightnings in 01. I raced my best friend he has every car you can imagine he has a 02 lightning as well as an SRT 10 Ram. He had a 99 Lightning until it got totalled but you can really tell the difference its like night and day with the 99 and the 02. I didn't think that from 50 I would pull away but I hit about 80 and was way in front but you could tell that he was gaining alittle on me. I let off at 95 and was still in front.

Message: Too funny. If you actually beat this 99 Lightning with your two mods, you beat the driver and not the truck. As I said, I love my R/T and it has a tad more mods than you (mopar pcm, k&n fipk, flowmaster exhaust, ignition mods, etc..,) and I highly doubt I could run down a 99 & up Lightning. I don't doubt that I could give one a scare from a stop but it would pull away and from a roll, forget it.

Message: Is it possible for a capable driver in an R/T to beat a capable driver in a 99L, yes I believe when they were tested by the magazines the 99L's were running low to mid 14's which is close although not exactly what a RC R/T will do.

Message: MT tested the 99L and ran 14.0 in the 100mph range. This is a big task for the R/T to accomplish. If you run capable driver vs capable driver in a stock L vs a stock or even lighly modded R/T, the R/T goes down. I might own a R/T but that doesn't mean I am oblivious to reality. Now moron driver in the L vs capable driver in the R/T from a stop, sure. From a roll, your toast as long as the L driver knows how to mash the gas. Come on, the power from the L is underrated from the factory and even with its weight, it still gets the nod. Then again, perhaps the k&n fipk and flowmaster exhaust really wakes up the 5.9L under the hood?

Message: Well despite what MT says I was checking an L message board and they were complaining just as we complain about slow ET's and they were showing mid 14's. That was a majority so either they all sucked at driving or the 99 L isn't as fast as everyone thinks it is.

Message: As long as many of you actually believe a R/T equipped with intake and exhaust can beat a 99 L from a stop and a roll, I'll keep enjoying the laugh that I am getting. Seriously, people are saying the L is a pile of crap but how many have actually driven one? If you did, you'd know it would put the hurting on any truck that was made in the past years with the exception of the new 10cyl Ram. I find it amusing when people are so blinded by brand loyalty that they have a hard time distinguishing between fiction and reality.

Message: I don't see where anyone says the L is a pile of crap except in your post, the L is a very capable and fast truck but it is possible that under the right conditions it can be beat. Just like a civic could take a viper if the viper driver is a moron or can't hook up worth a sh!t, maybe it's raining out or whatever. I think its more funny when someone comes to the forum to post about how a scenario could NEVER happen when they haven't the slightest clue what transpired.
Instead of looking for ways that his statement is possible you look for ways that it is impossible.

Message: well one of my best friends as a 99 Lightning and we raced when all I had was a drop in K&N filter and flowmaster dual exhaust. I beat him off the line. He started to pass me when I hit about 70. So its possible. All you guys think that all lightnings are fast when everything pre-2001 weren't crap. If I see a Lightning with a LCD third brake light I don't try to mess with it, cause those are the fast ones. Why does everyone refer to a Lightning as a "L"? Did anyone in hear pass kindergarden? JC you sound like you know your stuff. Well I have worked at a Ford dealership for the past 5 years so I think I know what I am talking about with the line up of trucks and the performane of the trucks. And due to the gearing of a 99 and 00 lightning they are not that quick up until about 55-60 thats when they get up to 100 in a hurry. I just want to see a 03 Lightning try to keep up with a R/T in the mountians of North Carolina.
