Message: Hey all,
I have a 1991 4WD with a 318 motor in it that I bought a few months ago, and have been plagues with an odd problem since memorial day. The truck is stock as far as I can tell, and I put Autolites as well as 8.8mm wires and an accel coil for a small tuneup.
I was cruising along on the freeway and the motor was stumbling and backfiring loud as hell, and I lost all power and had to be towed off the fwy. Towed to the delaer and they said the cat was melted down. Took it to a muffler shop and had new 2.5" pipes as well as a new cat and flowmaster hung on it. Fired up and drove it ok for less than 1 week. Again the motor stumbled and backfired and I made it off the freeway and was able to drill a series of holes just forward of the cat to limp it home. This time the cat was replaced with a straight pipe (no emissions check worry here). I drove into town ok and did some errands (bills, and it was nice finally getting paid), but on the freeway while I was cruising, I gave it some gas to pass and I got the same thing happening again, but I was able to continue a few more miles at cruise speed to exit the freeway. Once I got on the surface streets, I could not accelerate very much at all (20-25MPH?) and had loads of backfiring (cops are probably still looking around as it sounded like a shootout), and of course, I make it onto my street, and it died on the road. Could not restart it for 5 minutes or so, then I made it home.
I was planning on changing the 02 sensor soon, but I would like to figure out what the root cause could be? 02 sensor, MAP sensor, timing, fuel filter/pump, or what?? I know the EGR was replaced last November according to receipts and it looks brand new-and I can't see anything obviously wrong with it visually-in fact I was thinking perhaps the PCM might be shot, and I can't check the timing until my neighbor gets back today so I can use a timing light....
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Message: Has anyone had issues with the ACCEL coils? I swapped it back out with the old mopar coil and wire and so far it seems to be ok...

Message: I was going to say maybe #5 & #7 plug wires may be switched, but if the coil fixed it,then that's not the problem.

Message: Ok Bob.....damn, for all the people that help here, you get smartasses that probably screw newbies up trying to figure out what the hell he was talking about. you need to add a smilie so newbies know that you were just kidding around...
plug wires are routed correctly, timing is @10 degrees, it did turn out with a damn factory coil it was back to where it should be. ACCEL got a hot call from me, and the coil and wire are on its way to them.

Message: check your fuel pump. I was told the refinery companyies have been adding alcohol to fuel.At work we have had 20+ fuel pumps replaced in the last year alone. The reactions have been similar. Sometimes they work- sometimes they don't!!
Check the minor things first. Good luck

Message: Hey j-mac, it would not hurt one bit to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and watch it. I know by receipts that the pump was replaced in '99, and I did just change the fuel filter.
And that MTBE crap they put in western gas I am positive it is the culprit for my needing to replace some rotting fuel hoses. And some stations 'round here do cut their gas with alcohol, so I try to be picky about whom I buy fuel from.
Thanks.
