Subject: Coil wont come off 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: I've got a 2000 dak 4x4 with a 4.7. Its got 72000 miles and I thought I would change spark plugs. I'm a fairly good mechanic but the problem is I cant get the coils off the plugs. I tried prying on them, pulling on them with channel locks, I even used a small slide hammer, every thing short of a hammer and the coil wont come off the plug (yes I removed the nut first).I gave up after 30 min. because I didn't want to break a coil. (I dont even want to know how much thay cost) Anyone that has an idea how to get the coils off would be great, or should I just leave them and let the next guy worry about it?
Thanks
Jim

Message: Did you remove the nut holding each one in place? Look farther down the shaft and you'll see a nut on each one. Remove that and even though they are snug, they will come off.

Message: That sure is weird... maybe you could spray some silicone lube around them. The O-rings are probably sticking. I just changed my plugs today (48K) and they were pretty easy...i found it made access to the rearmost driver's side plug easier, by detaching the purge solenoid from the firewall. Other than that, that was the easiest plug change i have EVER done!! (10mm is the size, of the coil hold down nuts)
On a funny note, once i was finished, i put everything back in place (air tube and a/c lines) and started the engine. It ran fine, but in about 4 seconds i got a check engine light. I checked all the connections, and i had the coil for cyl 7 unplugged!! LOL!! Needless to say i connected the coil and reset the computer...

Message: benson09876, the O-rings will stick causing difficult removal. Here's a couple of things you can try: After removing the retaining nut, twist the coil back and forth (you can only move it a slight bit because of the studs on the manifold bolts). Try getting a large screwdriver (or BFS) and prying the coil up. Now there isn't anything to use as a fulcrum (except easily breakable things) so you'll need an even bigger screwdriver to wrap and lay perpendicular to the prying screwdriver. Luckily, I bought a Craftsman screwdriver set about 20 years ago and it had some 'gianormous' flat blades in the set, ones about 2 feet long and the other about 18 inches.
Once you have them out, clean them thoroughly and grease the O-rings. I used Amsoil extreme pressure grease and they glide out pretty easily. Good luck!
