Subject: Tranny advice????? IP: Logged
Message: I have an '89 Shelby Dakota (#899). The truck has 104k miles on her, and last night she gave up the tranny.I was accellerating from a stop-light at normal speed, and just after she got into top gear, I heard a loud *BANG*, and then I was coasting! When I stopped, I found that it would not even attempt to engage into any forward gear.I put it into Reverse, and it worked as normal.I never heard any other noises other than the initial *BANG* (no grinding,etc.).
I thought at first that since Reverse still works that maybe I burned up the drum,But after talking with a couple of places feel that it's possible I may have just had the Forward band break.
Any input ?

Message: Sorry no forward band there is a forward clutch. The band that the trans guy is thinking of id the low reverse band. It only engauges when in reverse and manual low. Other wise there is a one way roller clutch that hold the drum from turning. If that blew up when you stick it into manual low you will have forward motion again. In any case it needs to come out and be rebuilt.

Message: Well, I got it up on my Brother's lift this evening. When in Low, it barely goes into gear with the wheels off the ground, and it turns, with no noise, but that's it.I dropped the pan and filter and saw nothing.....except for the mushy shavings around the magnet. :)
Any ideas on a source for someone that knows what they're doing with this tranny and doesn't rip you a new one for it?

Message: If you can get it in and out your self I would buy a rebuilt and exchange the old one.

Message: Yeah, I can do that no problem. The problem is that just about everyone is quoting anywhere from $1700-$2100 for a rebuilt one.The few places I see that are reasonable are so far away that by the time you ship it back and forth, it's way up again.
