Subject: A/C system moaning!

I have a 98 R/T with some major A/C problems. It started out just as a noise whenever I went to max fan speed with the A/C on. One mechanic told me that it sounding like my vacuum doors were having trouble opening up. It sounds like a loud moaning noise coming from the dash. It never lasted long...about 5 seconds. Then it started on speed three...now it does it for a long time. The noises finally goes away after about 5 minutes now. Anyone else encounter this problem? It definitely seems to be getting worse.

It may be the vacuum doors, as your mechanic suggested. It could also be the bearings going bad in your A/C blower motor.

The noise doesn't last for long...that is what's strange. About 3-5 minutes and then it goes away. If it was consistent I would suspect the blower motor. I almost wish that was the problem...fixing the doors will be real fun.

You'd think a bad blower motor would make noise all the time but it doesn't always. I haven't had any problems with my Dakota, but on GM products I've had them "moan and groan" for a while and then quieten down. It is something you might check just to be sure...could save you some work.
