i just put on a mobile 1 oil filter. Before i had used a k&n but the guy at auto zone said the best is mobile 1 if you are using synthetic oil. also in my owners manual it recommends 5-w 30 oil for the 4.7. I know it 's expensive and this is the first time i have put synthetic oil in my truck so i don't know if there is a difference

The best oil filter for synthetic is also the best oil filter for Dino! The better the filter the longer an engine will last and the oil will also last longer. It is more inportant to run a great filter and decent oil then it is to run great oil and a poor filter. It would be better to run great oil and a great filter but that is not always an option!

I'm changing the oil at 1000 miles the first time. I'm putting in Castrol GTX 10w/30 with a Mobil 1 filter. The same again at 4000. Then at 7000, I'll switch to Mobil 1 10w30 and I'll stay with the Mobil 1 filters. I ran the K&N oil filters on my Ram for a while. I had a problem with a couple of them leaking so I went back to Mobil 1 filters.

K&N and Mobil 1 filters are both made by Champion.

The K&N has more filtering media and filters down to 15-18 micron particles. (very good)

The Mobil 1, looks the same but filters down to 10 micron. (excellent)

Dino or synthetic oils makes no difference to the filter on cleaning. The weight surely does.

IMHO --- Why dino? Are you changing your dino at 3k intervals? Using a Mobil1 filter is a waste of money if you are going to replace it every 3k miles. SuperTech makes probably the best (inexpensive) filter for the money. For the record, if you are dead set on using dino oil ---Chevron Supreme and Castrol GTX seem to be the best of dino oils.

Mr Roark,

Your opinion of the Amsoil filter? Yes, I know you are biased, but from my readings, also reasonable and logical.

Thanks

American - Synthetic - Oil = Amsoil

Okay, let's talk about three of the most talked about and preferred oil filters on this site. They happen to be the three most expensive oil filters as well --- Mobil1, K&N, and Amsoil.

In the oil filter tests that I have seen, the K&N and Amsoil Filters have better oil flow than the Mobil1. For the record, Mobil1 and the K&N are made by Champion Labs, and the Amsoil by Baldwin/Hastings, each and all to different specifications. *** So many products are outsourced these days ***

If you want a better flowing filter, you must stick with Amsoil or K&N over the Mobil1. Champion Labs has told me (and my own personal opinion) that the K&N is designed for extremely good flow for racing applications, while the Mobil1 is designed more for finer filtration. I think if you drive gently and do mostly highway driving, you are fine with the Mobil1, but if you drive agressively, K&N or Amsoil would be your better choice.

Of course since I am an Amsoil Dealer people are going to think I am biased. I do use Amsoil Filters (they are about $2 less expensive than the K&N and Mobil1 with Amsoil Preferred Customer or Dealer Pricing).

Note: If flow is a major issue due to piston slap or cold weather I would lean towards the Amsoil or K&N rather than Mobil1.

My opinion of the Amsoil Filters? ... some of the best in the industry.

What a bunch of consumer dorks you are. How much do those filters cost..$12? $15.. $20??
Why not just buy an oil filter relocator kit for $60..put 2 filters on the truck and not worry?
FWIW Fram filters are the WORST ones on the market.

A friend of mine that does lots of lab testing for a certain publishing company did a test of some oil fitlers awhile back. Fram was the absolute worst. Filter media was for crap and would often have large "gaps" where particles can pass through...basically not filtering the oil.
I think Wix and Purolator were tops in that particular test. He also did some testing on the latest batch of synthetci oils on the market. Look for the article real soon.

I want to make one note about Mobile 1 filters. I have not had any experience with K & N nor Amsoil filters yet. On a Grand AM I use to own I tried the Mobile 1 filter. I am a big fan of Mobile 1 oil its the only one that I use. The filter at times seemed to filter too good, by this I mean I heard sounds like the by pass vavle opening to let oil by. The sound stop when I went to a different filter. I have tried them on some other vehicle without experiencing this problem. I agree with DakotaEnthusiast if high flow an issue I would use one of the others

I say an oil filter is an oil filter as long as its from a reputable source, get a life already. Ive never heard of engine failure from an oil filter. PS I use a fram PH16 and MOBIL1 10-30 in my 00 4.7 SLT QC.

Deno, I agree that people discuss oil & filters WAYYY too much. However, I must point out that you are using one of the best synthetic oils on the market (Mobil 1) with one of the absolute worst filters (Fram). They used to be a good filter until Allied Signal took the helm. They now use very cheap materials and often end up clogging quickly and bypassing all of your oil(disabling themselves). For the price, you cannot beat AC Delco oil filters. Very high quality but only a few bucks.

FRAM Filters

(sorry to post discrediting info, but sometimes the truth hurts)

As far as I'm concerned, FRAM filters give good results AS LONG AS THEY DON'T FAIL. Given their weak construction (cardboard endcaps, plastic bypass valve), the likelihood that they WILL fail is significantly greater than with other filters of better design and construction.

The only way I would use a FRAM filter would be if they were the only filter available — and even then, I'd use the X2, which has metal endcaps.

For The Record --- Fram is not approved by Cummins.

Another thing that bothers me about FRAM is that they have so many oil filter quality levels and the filter they have at the top level is more expensive than oil filters like the Mobil1 and Amsoil.

Most people choose FRAM because of their low cost. If you are looking for an inexpensive ( $2 +/- filter ), you are much better off purchasing Walmart's SuperTech.

Bottom Line - FILTERS FILTER - and they must provide good flow, and NOT fail.

All filters are not the same. DIRT IS ENEMY # 1.

Amsoil = American Synthetic Motor Oils & Filters

Clarification to the original topic ...

The Mobil1 Oil Filter is a pretty flow-restrictive filter. Mobil1 filters are possibly matched to Mobil1 oil due to the thinner nature of Mobil1 oil (see earlier post Amsoil vs. Mobil1 on the General Board). Bottom Line --- I would not use the Mobil1 filters with other oils unless I knew they were on the thin side of the viscosity range.

Boy, I know I'll get flamed for this, but NEVER did I say Mobil1 filters were bad or Amsoil was better. (or did I?)
