Subject: removal of front drive axles
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1999 dakota cc 4x4 w/5.2L
I tow a camper that weighs aprox. 4000+ when loaded and am looking to squeeze a few extra miles out of my gas tank. Would it save me much if I removed the front axles. Would it be worth the time.I have looked for reasonably priced extra capacity tanks but have not found anything.Any help would be appreciated.

It probably would help the mileage if you were to remove the frontshafts because the truck does not have a front disconnect but I believe that the outer end of the axle shaft holds the front hub bearing together.
So if you take your front axles out, the front wheels will fall off.
