Subject: Compression Problem? IP: Logged
Message: Alright, I just finished testing my compression. All cylinders built full compression within two strokes. Here are the results:
Front |
160 | 160 |
150 | 150 |
145 | 160 |
160 | 125 |
Rear |
As you can see, the number eight cylinder is REALLY low compared to the rest. I poured a little oil into that chamber and tried again, as per the test method. Shot up to 210psi. I based on that, I figure normal compression is around 180-200psi for the cylinders. I also now know that the compression-ring on number eight is going out on me. Is this a good enough excuse to rebuild, change rocker-arms, advance the timing, replace all the gaskets, etc? If it is, I plan on rebuilding before next inspection.
On a humorous note, I reinstalled the plugs, reconnected the wires, etc etc. Then I fired it up. Half the oil in number eight blew out in one gigantic cloud, it was HILARIOUS! I wish i'd had my digital camera. After that it burned a slight amount of oil for a few minutes, with me idling the engine up and down. Now it's back to normal, but man that cloud was huge!

Message: I forgot to mention that the oil I used to test the compression in number eight was AMSOIL. It's what I have left-over from my initial switch 9100mi ago. It smells MUCH worse when burned than a conventional oil! :p

Message: Getting time for a rebuild.
I'm surprised to see numbers that high. I didn't think factory engines had that much compression. Learn something new every day, I guess.
