Subject: Normal compression? IP: Logged
Message: I purchased a compression-tester today, and intend on checking the compression in all my cylinders tomorrow out of curiosity. What kind of readings should I be getting out of a good 318? I don't think anything is wrong anywhere, I just want to do this as part of an ocassional maintenance routine I do.

Message: Mine says if it varies more than 20psi between two cylinders the head-gasket may be blown in that area. I was thinking around 150-180psi would be about normal for a 5.2L, but the 100min gives me something to watch for, thanks.

Message: You should get right around 110-120 psi.As the engine wears, you lose compression, that's OK to a point. I think you need about 70-80 psi for the engine run at all.
But what you really want to know is variability. Anything more than 10% from cylinder to cylinder is a bad thing. If one cylinder is low, place the piston at the bottom of the cylinder, and squirt about 3cc of motor oil in there. Aim for the back of the cylinder. Turn the engine over and re-test. If the pressure comes up, it's a bad ring seal. If it doesn't, it's a bad head seal.
