Subject: Air Intake ? 1992 V8 IP: Logged
Message: Quick question - I am looking at putting a better air filter on my truck. 1992 V8. The Intenseperformance unit looks to be the cheapest solution, but I was also thinking I could put a K&N filtercharger in the stock airbox and run a 2nd air hose to the other side of the box. That should give me a little more cold air, and might be better than the open element with the warmer air inside the engine bay.

Message: Thats what i was thinking, just added the k&n to the stock set up and maybe adding another air hose like you are talking about.and i agree with you on the open element with the heat from the engine.

Message: Yeah, that is what I thought. I just haven't seen many posts or pics on trucks of this vintage with a 2-hose setup. Only one I saw that had any detail was a 1989 Shelby Dakota. Different filter size and box though, but same consept. There is enough space on the other side of the radiator to cut a 2nd hole and route an additional hose. I figure with the two hoses and a high flow filter, it has to be better than or at least equal to a straight open filter. Cheaper for sure.

Message: Don't discount the performance of the stock setup with only a K&N drop-in and the "bug blocker" removed from the air intake hose entrance. You have a true "mini ram-air". A Mopar Performance PCM is worth every cent on a '92-'93. Get a high-flow cat and Flowmaster or similar duals. You can adjust the shift points with the little push-in square near the air cleaner right side. I used a Fram 163 PCV (wide mouth-turbo cars) and Bosch Platinum +4 plugs. This is from a former '92 5.2 RC owner (217K/ 8 1/2 yrs). Go dust some R/T's.

Message: You're wrong about the open-element being a problem. I do almost all my driving here in the state capitol in stop and go traffic and I have an open-element intake housing. Truck has run better since I put it on. I am in North Carolina on top of that, so it gets HOT down here. I feel that the 180deg thermo and orange coolant are more than sufficient to make up for the open-element housing under the hood. In fact, I rarely get above 210deg. I have to physically sit and not raise engine RPM for about 30~45min to mak my temperature gauge show half-temp. Now if you have a stock 195deg thermo (too hot anyway, unless you live somewhere cold), the story may be different.

Message: Thanks for the input guys.
Sephiroth - I wasn't actually saying the open element made more heat. What I meant was that a free flowing filter such as the K&N Filtercharger, when placed in the stock airbox and the bug guard removed from the stock air hose, then coupled with a second hose from the other side of the grill might actually be a better solution than a FIPK or similar open element. Reason being that the open element will breathe the warmer air that is inside the engine instead of dual hoses of relatively cooler air from outside the truck, plus you get some degree of ram air effect.
Just about any open element will be better than a completely stock solution. What I was looking for was the best price/performance ratio.
FIPK - 126
Intense Performance - 65
Filtercharger and tubing - approx 40
My truck has over 183k miles on it right now, and the bulk of my free cash (which isn't much to begin with) is earmarked for repairs and upgrades when I can. I just bought an MPI M1 intake since my belly gasket is blown, and a used Mopar PCM for the truck. My exhaust has holes in it and the muffler needs to be replaced, I think my fuel pump is due for a replacement and my front balljoints and tie rod ends are shot. Motor still runs as strong as when I bought it in 1992, if maybe with a little more smoke than before.

Message: Yeah pretty much you would think the hot air from the engine would go in the motor. hot air isnt good but cold air is better.

Message: I would sure be interested in getting more power from my 92 5.2 also. I have the K&N dropin. Where is the PCM and how can I reprogram it for the new Jet stage II chip I am getting?
Thanks

Message: Jet products generally produce only negative, or nil, results on Dodge engines. On the '92 5.2, there is a small adjustment square built onto the transmission cable on the right side of the engine. You may have to loosen the air cleaner assembly to access it. Look for a little square, about 1/2" x 1/2". When you press the front of the square, you will feel a rachet-like notch adjustment when you move the tranny cable forward or backward. Tension variation in the cable will adjust the rpm of gear shifts. You can set a different shift point for the dragstrip or street use. Its a really neat bonus from Chrysler Engineering. Mopar Action magazine pointed out this feature in 1993.

Message: On the tranny cable adjustment, would there be any difference in shift points if mine shifts at redline now in every gear or does that make it more responsive to downshifting or something else?
