Subject: 4.7L knocking IP: Logged
Message: I have a 01quad cab w/the 4.7 auto. Yesterday I noticed that at idle I can hear the motor knocking. It has 16,500 miles on it and gets only Mobil1 oil every 3000. It sounds like a rod knock but I can't be sure. It's only noticable at idle above that it seems to fade away. Also you can feel the knock on top of the intake. Any ideas, any known problems?
Also can someone tell me where to get the TSB that mentions the rough shift between 1st and 2nd, because the dealership is saying it seems normal to them. Thanks in advance. John

Message: I also have a '01 QC with the 4.7 auto. I too have sometimes heard a VERY light knock at idle, mainly when I am at a drive-up and next to a brick wall (where the sound can bounce back) I have not asked the dealer about this but would be interested to know what you find. I too change my oil every 3,000 miles and currently have 13K on my truck.

Message: The dealer flashed my PCM on a TSB.......I am back to regular gas and gain of 2mpg....havent decided if it has the same power (wife and kids in truck) seems a little slower off the line but shifts are smoother......look up TSB's for MIL codes P0442 and P0455...hope this helps...

Message: I have a 4.7L too and I thought it had a slight knock at idle. Took it into the dealer...turned out to be a vacuum leak from the hose on the TB.

Message: The "tappets" are actually another name for the hydrolic lifters. (In the 4.7L engine they do not actually "lift".)
Certainly the FUEL INJECTORS can be heard ticking as they open and close. This can be conscrued as knocking at idle.
Any good mechanic will have a snap-on engine stethascope in his toolbox. This can isolate ticking sounds to a specific location.

Message: Well I found the answer. ALL the flexplate bolts had backed out and were allowing the flexplate to rattle. The dealership said they have never seen this problem before.

Message: The 4.7L engine in my 2001 Dodge Dakota overheated.
I had it towed to a mechanic and they found a hole in the passenger valve cover about the size of a quarter. Under the valve cover was a broken rocker arm a push rod, and the guide for the push rod on the head had a piece broken off. Does this mean the engine is bad and needs to be replaced? The mechanic said it would cost about the same to replace the head as it would to replace the engine.
But the engine was running very well when it overheated.

It doesn't sound like you are getting accurate information regarding the nature and extent of the damage. The 4.7 is an overhead cam design motor. It does not even have pushrods - the cam acts on the valve train from above.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Don Gish you seriously need to get your truck out of there. Take it to another shop & report this one to the BBB.
and to ad to what Kowalski told you above
the 4.7 has no guides either

Message: I have a 4.7 that i drove without oil about 3
miles and it started knocking lightly but
still drove. On my way to a mechanic the
knocking became severe. And then the engine
died, and now doesn't start. Any clue on how
much it would cost for parts. And if its
difficult to fix myself.
