Subject: Removing O2sens. - help IP: Logged
Message: Hey Guys,,,,don't know what's up,,but I can't get to the upstream, passenger side O2 sensor to replace it. It's at an odd angle,,and I'm just wondering if any of you have replaced this, and what special fitting it took.
So far I've bought two diff. O2 sensor 'tools' - which I can physically put on the sensor,,,but I can't get a wrench up there to turn it - too tight. I've seen something called a 'crow-foot' wrench, but never used one. Is this what it takes,,or do I have to remove that part of the exhuast?
It's an '01 4.7 w/JBA headers. I don't think the headers are causing any issues as they line up the to the stock pipe.
Any help is appreciated - need done quick - Inspection coming up!!!

Message: I've got a '00 4.7L and last fall I put on a set of Gibson shorty headers. After I had both stock manifolds off I noticed that the rest of the exhaust system had some "play" in it. I could actually move the y-pipe around a bit. You might have to unbolt the headers at the y-pipe so you can move the y-pipe/exhaust around a bit. That might give you the room you need to put a wrench on your O2 socket. Hope this helps.

Message: Try this...
Cut the wire off the sensor so you can get a boxed end wrench on the o2 sensor housing...
Once you get the wrench on...
1. Use another wrench of the same or larger size or a "cheater" pipe to choke up on the wrench and put some torque onto it...
ALso, remember that when you are under a vehicle, tightening and loosening can seem tricky and a person can accidentally be trying to tighten something...;-)
2. If you can't get a "cheater" on it for more leverage...
Use a medium size brass hammer about 4-6oz head and hit the end of the wrench with the hammer blows to break it loose... this is the normal way to remove almost all parts on a dodge 4 cylinder vehicle I have learned... and it works for the most stubborn bolts.... jarrs them loose!!
GOOD LUCK!!
