Subject: 4.7 mileage test IP: Logged
Message: I drove from Las Vegas to Wisconsin and put the Dak through a 2000 mile gas mileage test. Not realy a test, but I had to do something to keep myself amused on the 30 hour journey. My 2000 2WD CC Dak averaged 20MPG highway with the cruise control stuck at 83MPH or 73MPH, 21+MPG best case, 19+MPG worst case.
I was thinking of putting the tail gate down on the return trip to see if the milage gets better or worse. Any other suggestions to to increase the mileage on the way home,,,, besides slowing down;)

Message: This would be the perfect time to switch to a 5w-30 Mobil1 synthetic! If you are using a conventional motor oil, I would really like to hear the difference in MPG on the return trip.
P.S. The return trip: Wisconsin to Vegas, you will running against the jet stream. That should negatively affect gas mileage. :P

Message: Putting the tail gate down will not help. Read this: http://truck-bed-covers.com/Tonneau_covers_save_fuel.htm
Do you have a K&N air filter? If not drop one and see if that makes a difference.

Message: Bed lid or topper shell will help MPG, and greatly help stability at speed and crosswinds. On 4.7 these help: Bosch Platinum 4418 plugs, K&N drop-in, remove rubber flap and airbox snorkel and install Fernco 4"/4" no-hub, freer-flowing exhaust, correct tire pressure, clean throttle body.

Message: Actually on my last truck the cap hurt me in cross winds. There was extra area there for the wind to push, therefore the truck got more squirrelly on open interstates than when I used to drive it without a cap.

Message: I have most of these things on the truck already, Mobil1 5w30, synthetic ATF and gear lube. Also have the "hill billy" sewer pipe air filter tube with the rubber flap removed and smooth riding Michelin tires at 50# air pressure.
The bed cap is a good idea, but I haul things in the bed often that will interfere with the cap or be a pain with a toneau. Would like to try it, but don't want to spend the $ for something I won't use often.
Think I am going to nix the tail gate down since I have heard of the air bubble affect before. Thanks for the article John.
I'll see if I can find a set of Bosch Platinum 4418 plugs since the plugs need to be replaced anyway.
The jetstream could be a factor since I had a tailwind when I was getting 21MPG through Wyoming/Nebraska.
Thanks for the feedback, anything else? ;)

K, here's the deal. I'm in Canada and I don't know what the conversion is....so, my mileage in the city is about 6.5 KM per Liter. Can someone do the conversion and let me know if I'm in the ballpark of what you guys are getting. I guess however, that the ones above are highway miles. I've got a K&N air filter, a hard tonneau cover, and an exaust with performance muffles split in a Y pipe after the CAT (so basically cosmetic).
SECOND....I read above about a clean throttle body. I've read other posts that say it will help the 'rough idle' problem as well. Is cleaning the TB simple enough to do for someone to explain it to me here?
Thanks

Message: I made it back to Las Vegas and only got 19 MPG average on the return trip. It was windy and rainy the first 1/2 of the trip and traffic was a lot worse, so I couldn't let the cruise control do the work all the time. 19.5 MPG avarage for 4000 miles isn't too bad though.

Message: Just travelled to Key West 3300 miles round trip. Drove in the 60's 70's and 80's for most of the trip which included the Virginia mountains. Best I got was 23.8 mpg and worst 18 mpg. The whole trip I averaged just over 21 mpg. 2003 Quad 4x2 4.7, auto, k&n filter, Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic with a fold-a-cover tonneau.

Message:
No oil will give you better fuel economy than the Amsoil 0w-30
and 5w-30.
The absolute best product to use to clean a throttle body is the
Amsoil Power Foam ($4.40 per 18 oz. spray can) it will not
damage any coated aluminum parts.
Tailgate up or down will not affect fuel economy.

Message: I just got an 04 Dakota club cab with the 5spd auto and the 4.7 it gets terrible gas mileage, about 11-12 MPG right now but I have been told by friends with new trucks that it will get a lot better. How true is this

Message: I'd have the dealer check it. The 4.7 is engineered to tighter tolerances than many other motors; I didn't see any significant changes with mine due to break in.

Message: My 04 4x4 QC has 4434 mi. on it now, and I'm only getting 11-12 mpg with about 50/50 city/hwy driving. My dealer here won't even look at it until at least 6000 miles, due to the break in period. I really don't expect it to get much better though.

Message: Matt and Brad: Is your mileage based on the console computer or measured MPG? I've checked my '04 QC 4.7 4X4 AWD one time @ 2000 miles and got 15.3 (measured). I'm at 3800 miles now and I'm going to check it again because the console computer average has gone up about 1MPG over the last 1K miles.

Message: 2001 4x4 4.7 club cab. When new on the highway i got 17.5 one year later on the same trip i got 18.5 best ever 19.2. I live in a small town lots of hills and stop signs and i get around 10 mpg.
So the ratings of 13 city and 18 highway are pretty close. If you drive it hard the mileage does go down real quick. I do not go over 70 on highway. With miles it does get a little better but not that much. My numbers are measured mpg.
