'00 4.7L w/70K miles, bought it new in 10/00. So far nothing major, but a few engine noises that I'm starting to get concerned about. I replaced the fan clutch at 30k, I had several tranny and PCM problems before it hit 10K miles. It was missfiring since new until 6K miles when I replaced the spark plugs with NGK's(dealer couldn't find any problems!). Now the exhaust needs replacing(not Stainless like my Chevy's were!). I've had quite a few other problems like BRAKES(I've replaced the rotors 6 times now!), rear end noise, steering rack, steering shaft, tierod ends, squeaking bushings etc. Overall it's been a great truck(not). I can't wait until my divorce is final so I can trade it in on a GMC!

I've had a 01, Quad cab, 4.7, 5spd (the one you have to shift), yadda, yadda.

~57,000miles

GOT RID OF THE FREAK'N BELT DRIVEN CLUTCH AND FAN ALTOGETHER, ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO!-replaced it, what for?

Original brakes, no problem- 6 sets of rotors? Do you drive with your foot on the brake? S\Do you use your parking brake when parked, or back up and brake hard to adjust the rear brakes? If so, you might still be on your original set.

Original tires- need a new set SOON

Exhaust IS stainless

All front end and ball joints still original, and no play.

Engine has some minor mods, never missed a beat, ever, idles smooth as silk!

In response to "texas todd".....Consider your self lucky. I had a '90 Chevy with the 305 which was one of the worse GM engines from '88-'90, yet when I sold mine it had 290K miles on it and it still didn't burn any oil. The truck still ran like new! I guess I was lucky.

If you do an archive search on this site and any other Dakota/Durango sites you'll see that brakes, steering(models with rack & pinion)& LSD problems are all common problems. On top of that the 4.7L is also known for blown head gaskets at around 65K miles(very common DC problem in almost all of their cars from 95-up), oil pumps going at 80K miles(w/o warning!), sludge build up, etc. Lets not get into the auto tranny problems & all of the knocking and tapping from the 4.7L.

The Dakota exhaust IS NOT stainless. That may have changed for '01 along with the rear brakes which I think went to disc for '01. My exhaust is bottom of the barrel steel which is rotted(the muffler is anyway).

My driving style has nothing to do with my premature rotor wear. I don't beat my vehicles(no stop light racing or off roading here) and most of my driving is highway. Every truck I've had in the past & some cars as well, have gone up to and above 200K miles with only a few minor problems here and there.

When my truck hit 24K miles one of my rotors split in half(manufacturing defect)almost causing me to wreck. Since then all of the replacements have warped. I do tow a car trailer from time to time with electric brakes that will stop the truck on a dime. The problem is the front brakes are under sized for the weight of the Dakota, not to mention the added weight of my 4X4 QC. My rear brakes are perfectly adjusted & I have anti locks.

As for the fan clutch, I would consider removing it if I thought it wasn't need, and I could get some better mileage, but to my knowledge I think the extra cooling is needed.

I know some people are very defensive of their cars & trucks. I'm not out to bad mouth anyones ride. I'm just stating facts which are well documented by me and others. Check out the Consumer Reports rating. Mostly black circles until '01.

Texas Todd, I wish you a long happy trouble free life with your '01 Dakota. Me, I got my eye on a nice '04 GMC Sierra crew cab.

Now lets get back to discussing high mileage Dakotas!

A '97 5.2L 4x4 with about 100K miles. This vehicle is the most reliable thing I've ever owned. I haven't had a single mechanical failure since I bought it new at the end of '96. I didn't have to replace the original tires until 70K miles, and I'm just now going to be replacing the front pads and rotors. I do regular oil/fluid changes, but that's about it.
The only thing that has gone is the CD player on the radio. For some strange reason it keeps flaking out on me and won't accept a disc. Someday I'll buy a new one.
Honestly, though, the truck has been in a couple of accidents. One rear end - pretty nasty - and I'm sure some parts were changed for that by the repair crew. Another... my wife hit a deer and did some minor damage to the front end. It's possible things were changed that I'm not completely paying attention to. Insurance money.. who cares. ;)
I'll be changing out the ball joints, a couple gaskets, and the brakes here soon.
Still shiny and great to drive. We had an idea of trading it in for a "family" vehicle, but I just couldn't do it, and even my wife admitted it's been pretty good and therefore we're planning on keeping it. I get to start modding it now that my wife realizes it's a vehicle that will be around for a while.

I have 40000 trouble free miles on 03 RC 4.7 AWD. The A/C drain clogged and got the passenger side carpet wet. A little L tube fixed that. My only failure so far. Dodge makes good stuff. My friend has a 79 1500 4x4 400Cu. In. with 465000 miles with the original motor and transmission with just regular maintenance. I think mine will last a bit longer.

I've got a 2000 quad cab- immaculate condition w/ 47K. It is the BEST truck comfortwise I've owned, (my previous were 88,89 Chevy's, 97,00 Ford's) The worst part about this truck is the gas mileage. I don't drive it hard at all. It spends a majority of the time on the road. The best it's done is 15 most of the time 13. Anyway- overall I'm pretty happy. Don't see myself running bowties or blueovals anytime soon.
