Subject: Gas Guage Wrong? IP: Logged
Message: I have an '04 Sport CC that has a 20 gal. tank. I filled up shortly after the low fuel light went on and filled it about 13.5 gal. I thought this was odd so the next tank i went about 40miles past the low fuel light and the needle was on empty. I only filled up 14.75 gal. I called up my dealer and they said it was reading the correct voltage and that I probably had a 6 gallon or so buffer. Is that right?

Message: I have wondered about this very same issue on the several occasions with my 01 Dak Quad. Dodge boosts a 24 gal fuel capacity for my truck, however even after running the truck to empty according the gauge, and 40 or 50 miles passed the warning lamp on the dash panel, I have never been able to get it to take more than 17 or 18 gallons of gas. Seems like a 20% reserve is a little much. I have never been brave enough to run the truck to the point of being out of gas as who knows what that would screw up. I will be very interested in reading what you find out..

Message: Well I e-mailed Dodge and took my car in for service and this is what I told them: I had a Dodge service tech look at the tank and he found it to be "dead on" with a computer link up. My usual fill up on my 20 gal. tank is 13 gal. To test what I could fill up to I experimented. I had my idiot light come on at 175mi, my needle was on E at 200mi, and I finally filled up at 225mi (needle at end of travel below E). My total fill up: 16 gal. Which is only a defference of 4 gal. I could be using. Needless to say they are going to need to correct the problem. I'll post what I find out.

Message: Guys, you have a good amount of gas after the light comes on. I purposly ran my '92 dry once. I went on a 2hr one-way trip to visit my ex-girlfriend back when we were dating, and the light came on as I reached her town. Drove to her house, then to church, then to her friend's place, then half-way home before it sputtered and died. I then pulled out the 5gal I had in the bed and filled up, kept going. The '95 I have run with the light on for days. The reserve amounts are around 15%-20% of the tank.

Message: There's probably a good reason for that - with the fuel pump in the tank, it uses that volume of gas to help dissipate heat. Don't want to burn up your fuel pump for a bit more cruising range, do you ?

Message: Well then how many gallons do you guys normally fill up to with a 20 gallon tank? I'm looking at 14 gallons when I'm on "empty". It's a pain because thats only 200mi when I should be getting more of a 300mi range out of my tank. I feel like im at the gas station every other day.

Message: Dear Steven,
Thank you for your recent email to DaimlerChrysler Motors regarding your
2004 Dodge Dakota.
I regret the fuel system problem your Dakota has experienced and
appreciate the time and effort you took to bring this matter to my
attention. Comments like yours are one way to learn of problems that
may develop and improvements desired by customers.
Unfortunately, given the many variables involved, we are unable to
diagnose your vehicles problem via email. We recommend suggest
continuing to work with your authorized DaimlerChrysler dealership to
arrange an appointment for proper diagnosis and repair. Our dealerships
have the factory training, equipment, and information available to them
to diagnose and correct problems with DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation
vehicles. We are confident that this concern is not beyond their
capabilities. Should your dealer require factory assistance, it is
available through our zone office.
However, it is important to note that the true volume of your fuel tank
may differ from what you experience when attempting to fill up your
vehicle with fuel. The fuel pump pick-up does not extended all the way
to the bottom of the tank, so as to prevent the gathering of residue and
other particles that may have settled on the bottom of the tank.
Depending on the overall size and layout of the tank, this can translate
into a discrepancy of a few gallons.
Thank you for your email.
Sincerely,
Randall

Fuel tank/guage is inaccurate.
Comments:
---------
I have an '04 Dakota Sport with a V8. The dealer says that my gas tank
is 20
gal. The most I have ever filled up my gas tank was 16 gal. I understand
the tank has a buffer in place but this is 4 gal. difference. When I
filled
up to 16 gal. I drove past when the fill tank light that came on at
175mi
and when the needle was on empty at 200mi. I filled the tank at 225mi
and
the needle was below empty and only got 16 gal. of fuel in it. I could
see
gas at the top of the tank's fill neck. I set up an appt. with my dealer
who I guess measured the tank with a computer hook-up and found the tank
and guage to be "dead on". Generally I fill the tank up on empty and
only
get 13-14 gal. in it. I was wondering what you guys think the problem
is.
It is slightly inconvenient to stop that often for gas when I know I
have a
bigger tank. If you guys could find an answer for me I would appreciate
it.

Message: Doesn't sound like there is a problem - that's all I put it mine when it reads empty too. You could run it longer empty if you really want to, but like I said before, some of that fuel is there to cool the pump. I just wish the warning chime didn't come on so early. I had some late '60s, early '70s Mopars that would run out as soon as the needle hit "E" while most other brands still had a small reserve. I'll bet people who weren't used to Mopars didn't think much of that either. Better to have a buffer than be stranded.
