Message: My compressor thing isn't turning anymore, and someone said it'd be a lot to replace, parts and labor would be a lot.
So i was thinking of doing it myself, cause I'm moving to arizona, and lack of A/C wouldn't be too comfortable.

i circled the part, just to make sure thats what its actually called.
Anyway, is this a hard fix? Just looking for opinions on how much i can handle as a newb.

Message: Doesn't look too good. The whole clutch assy. is shot. I'd put an entire new compressor on, call Airpro. They are listed in either Mesquite or Rockwall, TX. Don't forget to change the accumulator as well.

Message: JUST left the bank with a $806.08 check to give to the A/C guy who replaced the compressor (locked up) and drier/accumulator on my 2000 4.7L CC Dakota this morning.
Seems like a Sanden 4729 compressor is damn near a dealer item only but he was able to find a distributor that had 2 new ones for $299.00 each and a $279.00 refurb on the shelf. No other company in the area could get one and the dealership wanted over $500 for it.
Sitting cool in Florida now.

Dang!! I'm in the wrong end of the business...if you knew what the parts actually cost and what the markup is you'd be P-O'd.

Message: I know, parts were only $400, the rest was all labor...AND I ALREADY HAD THE COMPRESSOR OFF!
AND the thing whines like a banshee now. My 4.7L sounds like I got a gear drive installed on it. Now I have to take another half day off and go back and get it fixed again...AND they didn't even put the same model compressor on it.
Originally I had a SANDEN 4729 on it, they told me they could get 1 from their distributor. I popped the hood last night and there sits a SANDEN 5738 or something like that. The other A/C repair places in my area told me I had to have a 4729 to replace the original one due to specific mounting issues or line ID sizes. Here sits something other than a 4729.
This sucks because they are a reputable business and I have had work done there before.
