I know I'm asking this question in a biased arena, but I'm trying to decide between a shortbox 5.3/5speed GMC 1500 or a 4.7/5 speed dakota. They both have the same GM nv3500 tranny, the GMC is available with 4.10s and an eaton locker, and the Dak can be had with a 3.92 LSD.
I have a feeling I will have to order either one, as where I live in yuppi massachusetts all any dealer stocks is automatic luxury models of any vehicle.

You better decide sooner, rather than later, about what you want if you have to order before the manufacturers stop taking build orders on current year models. Unless you are thinking forward to 2005. In that case, the Dakota is going to look very different (my opinion - it's ruined). Keep this in mind... Good luck.

Yeah, I know. I had to drive to central vermont to test drive a stick GMC, and they sold that truck to someone else the next day. (Doh!) I've never driven an RC 4.7/5spd dakota, but I tried an extended cab.

i test drove a 5spd 5.3 gmc before i got my dak, although i actually liked it just a hair better the 5000 extra bucks it cost was worth a damn, especially since it had no options and my dak is a fully loaded SLT, oh yea, the dak is hands down faster as well,

I run several 5.3 5 Speed RC 1500 Chevy's around here, and for a Dakota 4.7L 5 Speed my truck is quick. I have a hell of a time keeping the nose of my truck in front of them. So don't belittle the Chevy's. Personally I like the Dakota more than the Chevy. I haven't liked the looks of Chevy trucks since about 1972, and didn't like the Dodge till they brought the 3rd Gen Daks out.

You can if you order the 5.3 with the flexible fuel engine

Well, I just talked to the dodge dealer here, he said factory ordering for 04' dakotas is already over. He only found 1 RC v8 5speed in the whole northeast too, I have to call him back to find out if it has LSD and 3.55 or 3.92 gears.
