 Subject: 5.2L hesitates and backfires

My engine is hesitating and backfiring. It starts accelerating just fine, then bogs around at around 15MPH and starts to slow down and sputter as I continue to press the accelerator. Sometimes it backfires while doing this. It seems to be happening only when cold or when starting the truck after it's been parked for an hour or 2 (it's not really "cold" under these circumstances). I have gone through 2 tankfuls of gas since this problem started, so I don't think the problem is due to bad gas or water in the gas.
I bought this truck used with 60,000 miles (has 73K now), and I don't know the maintenance history, except for what I've done myself (changed upper ball joints, surprise, surprise). I figure it's about time to change the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, so perhaps I should wait until changing these components before looking elsewhere for the source of the trouble or taking it to a professional.

hey i have the same thing on my 95 318
it only happens when its cold i have 60,000 on the truck 15,000 on new motor (daks dont like to be driven threw 3 feet of water) i have all aftermarket plugs wires distibuter coil and computer and exhaust ad all kids of stuff my has been doing this for a while now i find if i just ease off the gas and reapply its ok

No, no check engine light. So I assume this means no codes in the computer. Mechanic told me it would cost somewhere around $75 to hook up a "computer," but if all the shop's "computer" does is read and interpret codes, it probably will be wasted money for me, right? Or will the computer really diagnose components above and beyond those my truck's computer already tracks? For example, will the shop's computer tell me if the problem is the fuel filter?
It's not just doing this when the engine is cold. It happens every time the truck is "parked" for any longer than 15 minutes or so. If I drive 30 minutes to a store, and go in for a few minutes to buy something, when I come back out, my truck bogs for the first 5 minutes or so of driving.

Check the wires and votage going to the fuel pump. A few nicks in the wires could cause the pump to gound out. Also pull your plugs, they will tell you a lot about what you engine is doing. Are they fould or overgaped? Stick with the cheep Autolights and Gap at 0.40. PS if you are getting better than 13MPG city then its time to sell. Love my 318 Gas Hog fun to rip up the road.

75 k that maybe change the fuel filter i had a truck do some similar stuff like that and i change the fuel filter and after about 2 hours of drive it was back to normal

Isn't the fuel filter hard to get to? Mounted inside the tank?
I'm afraid I'll have to go see the stealer. I think I'm in above my head. At least I managed to change my upper ball joints by myself. They went bad within a day or two of the bogging problem. Love it when lots of problems appear at once.
