Subject: RE: Gas prices! Wow! IP: Logged
Message: Got an update for the holiday weekend. I noticed many gas prices came down this weekend. Many are at $1.99, instead of the $2.03-$2.05 they were on Thursday. The radio was even broadcasting prices of $1.97. Oh well, after seeing the Day After Tommorrow I've decided I need to stockpile my gas so when everyone switches to non-gas usage, I can still drive my big V-8 around. Haha, wouldn't trade it for the world.

don't listen to people who say gas prices are set by supply/demand. bull. they are set by the gas station companies mostly. the real wankers are the azzwipes at the commodities market who like to buy high. if they all refused to buy at higher than x dollars, then the price wouldn't go above x dollars. opec is a cartel, so why can't the oil futures traders form their own collusionary group?

Message: The oil futures traders DO have a cartel. I've read they are hording gas hoping the price will keep going up and they can sell at a huge profit. Don't you just love unabashed capitalism...

Message: Jeff - You're right - prices aren't "set" by supply and demand, but oil companies don't arbitrarily set prices in a vacuum either - they're influenced by a combination of market forces. Simple fact is that despite all the whining, consumer consumption of gas hasn't been significantly curtailed by the (relatively) high prices - yet. If things get bad enough for people on a budget (which is most people) to affect their lifestyle and purchasing decisions in a big way then there will be downward price pressure (remember the '70s?).
And if you like a free market society then you have to accept the desire of everyone involved to make as much do-re-me as they can. But there is always a price-point beyond which the average consumer can not/will go.

Message: Ok, sure, but if your income is $60k/yr now you would have to take a $35k/yr cut in pay to enjoy that 1979 price of gas. Still sound good, sure, or are you just saying that because everything seemed simpler then and your choice has absolutely nothing to do with the price of gas?
