Subject: Open Element vs FIPK

Hey guys, just was wondering what you guys thought was better for my 1998 Dak with the 318, everything stock, a open elemnet air filter or a K&N Cold air intake. I know that the open element costs alot less but how much less power does it give you than the cold air intake???
Thnx

If you are comparing it to a 14 inch open element with a 3 inch K@N, I would say they are the same. Look for a 14 inch drop base element made by Mr. Gasket. It will fit a 94 Dakota like I have. I am not sure about a 1998 Dakota though.

i had a mopar FIPK (same as K&N) and an Edelbrock Proflo filter (open element). They were both around the same for performance but the FIPK got a LOT better gas mileage.

6.6 Lt. Big Block, 727 TF shift kit, 452 heads, edelbrock 750 cfm, .513/.513 284/300 crower cam, comp cams springs, comp cams pushrods, 1.5 roller rockers, dp intake, mopar ignition, mopar windage tray, dual exhaust w/ 40 series flowmasters, 4.10 gears, coilover drag suspension, approx, 3500 lbs

the mopar was the K&N rebadged with the mopar name on it. It is the exact same item.. just recently discontinued though.

I run a smaller open-element, and after installing I thought I had a new engine. No experience with a FIPK though.
