I ususaly do the 3 year 60000 thing if it is over that then replace. It is a personal thing more than a factual thing.

With all due respect to CW (he sees a lot more vehicles than I do)I replace all belts and hoses at 5 year intervals and have never had a failure since I started doing that. I wouldn't suggest pushing stiff longer than that, sure it might last longer but failure of these parts is never convenient.

I replaced my belt and all my hoses 3 days ago. I have a 98' RC and it has 30,000 miles on it,... I am only 17 and I've had the truck for a year, but I am going to make it a practice on all my cars for my life,... at every 30,000 miles buy new hoses and belt, its always a good precaution and a good thing to do for the life of the car or truck. When I changed my hoses I also threw away those stupid fasteners cause I like the screw metal brace kind, they seem a little more sterdy. Just throwin my opinion out there. I noticed a huge difference on sound when I changed my 30,000 mile belt. Peace out, and I hope the best to your belt change. It's a snap,.. 10 min. tops.

Belt fade generally refers to the belt wearing to the point where it starts becoming level or lower than the lips on the pulleys it rides in.

I have a VW Polo, purchased in Sept. 2002 - just yesterday the fan belt broke on it. The car has done 18,000 miles. Have spoke to VW Helpline and they tell me this is normal with amount of distance i have clocked up and that it will be considered a wear and tear item. A brand new car with a broken fan belt and it not even a year old - does this sound strange or normal?

Would be grateful if anyone could shed some expertise on this issue.

Thanks, Niall.

why are you coming to a site dedicated to Dodge Dakota trucks, a North American vehicle and asking questions about a German built sh1tmoble? Most if not all of the guys on here want nothing to do with foriegn built junk! All of our trucks use a serpintine belt that drives everything and lasts for 50/60,000 miles and most times even more. A "fan belt", gimme a break, the last time I saw one of those on an American car was 20 years ago, which was before most of the kids on here were born! And now you want "expertise" on the subject?!?!?!?!?

Thanks for your reply - arrogance and ignorance are also American traits (like your serpintine belt), although i already knew that!! You can ignore messages which you feel you are unqualified to answer!

No but you might get an answer that reads: "You are in the wrong sight, sorry unable to help you!" Bit more civilised this side of the globe, not so quick to act!!

Us Dodge owners out here are far from being civilised, we are CRAZY about our trucks....Even with all the problems that we have and read about here, we still luv our trucks...
