Subject: 4.7 Question

Message:
I am planning on purchasing a 2002 Dakota with 4.7 and a 5 speed manual transmission. Been hearing a lot about rear ends, 3.55 and 3.92, but not very knowledgable about them. Need to know the advantages of one over the other and is one better on fuel economy than the other. Sure appreciate some help here, before I make an order.

I have owned both. A 2000 4x4 with the 3.92 and 5spd and 4.7. It was fast on top and bottom. But the roms sucked gas on the highway. Now I own a 2002 4.7L 4x4 5spd with the 3.55. I actually like the 3.55 better. better highway mileage and seems smoother power. but if youre drag racing a lot there is no question, 3.92

I just got a 2002 RC, 5spd, with a 4.7L and 3.92 gears. It's a fun little truck with a good punch.

The only other Dakota I drove with 3.55 was a Ex. Cab, 3.9L Auto, but that truck /was/ really smooth compared to all the others now that I think of it. It had no where near the oomph my current truck has, but was very nice driving around on the highway, I think I put almost 50 miles on that dealer's truck, about 35-40 of it highway.

I too just got a 2002 4.7 QC 4x2 3.92 and this thing is quick! But I think I would be sick of the "jerky" feeling of a 3.92 if I were keeping it stock. I plan on putting 33 inch tires though so it will act more like 3.55's (which I think feel better). I would say 3.55's IF stock, but 3.92's if you are going above 31 inch tires.

I have to agree with TallQuad. If your going to Race or put bigger tires on go w/ 3.92 otherwise stick with 3.55. Drive both and you'll see the difference.. But you have to get on the gas to really feel it.

Damn that was quick response. Don't think I'll be doing any drag racing, since I live in a small town in Alaska. Not much in the way of drag strips around here, but there is a lot of distance between places you may need to go. So, my main question would be, which gets better gas mileage, the 3.55??
Thanks

I have a 2000 4.7 4x2 with 3.92's and love it. It really moves. It is a little jerky though. First gear is super low.

3.55's (stock) will be better for gas, but not much. They are pretty close mpg wise, just depends on your right foot!! hehe...

I have a 2001 Dakota, 2wd, auto that jerks a little bit at 55 mph (in overdrive only). I noticed the other day that a nearly imperceptible "jump" on the tach is accompanied by the slight jerk. I immediately had the fluid and filter changed...no help. Now I'm discovering all kinds of little quirks about Dodge trannies that I never heard of before. Any ideas.?

Sounds like you have hit the speed limiter. Buy a Superchips tuner to raise it so you can go faster. When you hit that stationary or moving object at 120 there won't be much left to identify...

Buy a sports car designed for those speeds,
handling & braking are also part of going fast..

If he had to wake up a post that was close to 4 years old to ask this question while sitting still, kind of have to wonder about his judgement in a truck at 120 mph...
