Subject: Which V8 to get? IP: Logged
Message: I am a newbee to Dakotas, but am seriously considering purchasing a newer (but used) quad cab. Before I start to go for test drives, though, I could use some help with engine specs. Which V8s were offered in the quad cabs in which years? What are the hp, and torque ratings for each? And perhaps the most important question: what are the pluses and minuses of each of the different V8s? I am more interested in street drivability than towing, and am not opposed to making engine mods for more power. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Message: Based on what you are saying about streetability I would go with a dakota R/T with a 5.9 litre engine, although you would have to purchase it used because the last year for that model was 2003. The only V8 engine in the dakota currently being sold it the 4.7 DOHC engine.
The 360 5.9 is a much easier engine to mod and it comes in a nice street package known as the R/T. The engine makes 250hp and 345lb/ft of torque, and was only available in the R/T w/ an auto tranny. So if you desire a manual tranny you will need to look at older 5.2 litre models or get a new 4.7 litre model.

Message: Thats a little misleading, you can get a 5.9 in the quadcab, years 00-03 i believe, only real difference is the r/t has a performance muffler and sits 1 inch lower

Message: You can get a V8 quad cab dakota with a 5.9 or a 4.7. Their are more and easier mods for the 5.9 AT THIS TIME, but it seems their are new mods coming out for the 4.7 every day. I'm a little biased and prefer the 4.7 (SOHC). The 2001 and newer models have 5 or 10 more ponys then the 2000. I'm not sure exactly why except that the newer ones have a 68 mm throtle body and the 2000 has a 65mm. The 2000 4.7 is rated at about 240 hp and about 270 pounds of torque. I do tow a 3000lb boat with a 2000 4.7 and have no complaints although I've never driven a 5.9 which has more torque. I think the gas milage is a little better with the 4.7 but not much. I've seen claims of 20 mph but I've never gotten better the 17 (on a good day with a strong wind pushing me) and usally more like 15. Hope this helps Good luck.

Message: Wow this place has a lot of misinformation. Basically there are two 4.7 engine configurations and two different pcm/tcm configurations, non-Ca emission 4.7 with one cat and 235hp and 295tq, Ca emissions 4.7 with 3 cats with 230hp and 295tq, 2000-2002 4.7's with 4speed auto and 2003-2004 4.7's with 5speed auto. Never heard of a 240hp and 270tq 4.7.

Message: I own a 5.9 QC it has 5hp less than the RT when it is stock, same truck otherwise.
dodge says the RT runs 255 hp/365 torque (i think)
the QC runs 250 hp/ 355 torque
I added custom plug wires and plugs and a 3inch flowmaster and pull a bit more HP and torque than the RT now.

Message: Okay people, here goes-
4.7 Dakotas- 230 hp, 290 ft lbs
5.9 r/t Dakotas- 250 hp, 345 ft lbs
5.9 non r/t Dakotas- 245 hp, 345 ft lbs
The quad cab Dakotas do come equipped with an optional 5.9. The r/t is offered in cc or rc only, and is an inch lower, has (wow) 5 more hp, larger antiroll bars for better handling, and different muffler. Oh, and it's only offered in 2wd.

Message: I'm a 2002 4.7 CC owner and If I had to do it all over again, I would go with the 5.9 R/T. Older more reliable engine, more torque, same fuel economy. And a lot more mods for the 5.9 than the 4.7. Hypertech still hasn't come out with a programmable controller for the 4.7 and its been out for 3 years now.

Message: I work for a dodge dealer and the new 05 dakotas have no available hemi option (it will fit though) they do offer the 4.7 HO as a performance option. For now we will have to choose from the 3.7, 4.7 and 4.7HO in a truck that has very similar "dorky" looks as the new durango-BUMMER.
