Subject: to those that installed there power trax IP: Logged
Message: I have a power trax locker(lock rite). it has been making a metal to metal contact sound for some time, and comes disengaged and re-engaged violently on launches.
I emailed power trax and they advised that it was not normal and to take the unit out and inspect it. They did not say what to look for in this inspection.wtf even though I emailed them that question.
I didn't install it the first time so I was wondering what I would need to remove it or to atleast remove the rear diff cover for that type of inspection.
please advise. also I have read back posts but couldn't get much help from them. It does not appear I am the only one with this problem.

Message: conig, I had the powertrax in my 00 dakota, I had the same problem, this was on a v8, 5speed, with the 9 1/4, I let the problem go on as long as I could stand it, finally ordered a sure-grip carrier from mopar performance, on the install I found alot of spring material in the bottom of the housing from the powertrax,
#1 I would pull the cover and inspect for any metal in the housing, I was lucky and didn't tear up my ring and pinion gears
#2 You will probally find some metal from the springs, I would suggest investing in a good posi-unit carrier, I am very happy with the sure-grip, It shave .1-.2 tenths off my quarter times
#3 You should only need a basic socket set and small pry bar to remove the cover, you will need 2 quarts of the rear diff fluid, I run 75-90 synth from mopar, and you will need one tube of grey sealer for resealing the cover, also from mopar, other sealers will work fine though
If you pull the cover and everything looks ok, put it back together. I can tell you from my exp. with the trax unit that it will make noise and this is common but the more you hear it the shorter the life left on the unit

Message: thanks for the reply.
my concern isn't really with the noise in corners but the locer is straight up engaging and diengaging after a launch in a straight line.

Message: Ya I know, mine was fine when I was on a low traction surface, but when I took it to the track the damn thing would ratchet in 1st at start up, then really bad on 2nd gear shift
