You forget, you should probably drain the fluid first, then take it off, put it back on, fill it up.
Trever, sounds like you should take it to your freindly mechanic. The water pump is the easiest thing to change out.

Message: Trevor, if you are mechanically inclined go ahead and give it a try...its how we learn. You can get a manual or a knowledgeable friend to guide you.

Message: Step 1. Buy a Chiltons Manual.
The fan and fan shroud are a bear to get off and most likely have to come off together. After that. it's easy.

Message: ha the whole operation is easier said then done anybody saying its easy hasnt done it on a v8 dakota! ok first of all yes get a chiltons manual with out it u probably wont know where to start or what to do! now u gotta take off the fan from the fan clutch now u will probably need a special fan clutch tool u can rent from autozone and a good crecent wrench without those i dont think u will be able to do it. then take the fan shroud off which is pretty self explanatory and pull the fan and the fan shroud off at the same time then disconnect the hoses from the water pump hopefully u have already drained the fluid or u dont have to cuz u dont have any left being the reason why ur changin ur pump then unbolt all 7 bolts (3 on top 4 on the bottom) remember which bolts go where then take the water pump off u might need something to pry it off with. and then take off that little hose on the very top which is a bitch to get off( bad engineering by mopar) then scrap off all the old gasket/posiseal if u dont ur new one will leak so make sure its clean then simply put the new one on and reverse all the other steps hope that helps i just did mine like last weekend
