Subject: Valve stem install height -head problems IP: Logged
Message: My shop is having problems assembling my 1.92 r/t heads. I bought them bare, with manley valves, and mopar springs. The shop is getting very inconsistent install heights for the springs(.090 between intake and exhaust). They are looking for the spec for the stem install heights. I would appreciate any input.
They are also thinking of sinking the seat into the head to make everything line up. These heads are supposed to be a bolt together deal. What is going on? I really don't want to end up with a pair of huge paperweights.

Message: What springs did you buy?
What valves did you buy?
What retainers/locks did you buy?
All of these determine installed height.
Sinking the seats?????
I would have to question what kind of butcher shop you are using.
By using different retainers and locks on the intake or exhaust you should be able to get them close to each other. Then have the machine shop mill the spring pockets on the short ones (intake or exhaust) to make them the same.

Message: I'm thinking you DO NOT want to machine the springs pockets deeper to compensate for the stem height difference. This would have an impact on individual spring pressure. It's tough to tell what's wrong without seeing the heads. Good luck.

Message: Speaking of only intake or exhaust:
If the valves are the same---
If the retainers are the same---
If the locks are the same----
If the the valve angles are the same---
if the seat angles (and thickness) are the same---
and the heights are different between them, then...Have the pockets milled to correct the height, it is the only other variable.
Sinking the seats is not the answer, the valves should completely seal while not protruding too much either way into the port or into the chamber.
Do not mill the pockets of the exhaust to match the intake (or vice versa).

Message: I don't specifically know how to solve your problem, but I echo the previous responses...DO NOT SINK THE SEAT DEEPER INTO THE HEAD!
