Subject: Propane converstion IP: Logged
Message: I am looking to convert my 2000 Dak 4.7L to bi-fuel ( propane/gas). It will be the electronic propane injection so the timing is auto controlled and bang on for either fuel. As propane is 1/2 the cost of gas and I fuel up the little 70 l tanks every 3 days, I am hoping to ease the fuel bill pain. Anything I should watch for?. The truck now has 185,000 Km's on it and the motor has been rock solid so far. Anybody ever done a conversion to a V8 dak?

Message: Randy,
I've been looking into the propane thing as well for my 98 5.2L. Have you found any sort of conversion kits available? What companies make these? I've looked at some websites, but have only found kits for Chevy's and forklifts.
My dad used to have an F-100 work truck that he converted to propane. It was pretty cool since he had a big 'ole tank in the bed and only had to fill it up once a month. Saved a bunch on fuel, too!

Message: are you guys joking, propane... wtf? I am 17 make $10.00 an hour, have a 5.2 V8 and I can afford to pay for my gas, along with my $4000 a year insurance bill thanks to good old NJ. If you guys are willing to spend the time and effort to switch your trucks to propane power, I would say save the money you dont have and go back to school so you can get a real job to pay for your gas. That or go buy some ricer

Your local propane distributor will provide you with info on
these systems "if" one is available for your truck.

Message: Thanks for the input, fellas. Not that I care what "wat?" thinks, but I'm more than able to pay for my gas AND I have a real job. My truck is my hobby. I like trying different things (suspension, engine, etc...). Alternative fuels stuff is neat to research. I've looked into a Cummins transplant(4bt...not even going to consider the bigass 6bt), and the last issue of 4wheeler had some articles about propane, so it got the wheels turning. Propane has it's ups and downs. I just turned-over 107k miles on my truck, and the engine is getting a little tired, so I'm looking at my options when it comes time to start building my new engine.
Thanks!

Message: Too bad Wat?? doesnt have the cajones to post as himself...maybe thats cuz hes not 17 and doesnt make $10/HR...Although i dont doubt he pays $4000/yr on insurance for that 5.2l his parents bought for him. And when you only have to drive to Highschool and to work at the local mcdonalds...you dont use much gas..anyone could afford that.
When he gets a real job, drives 500+ miles in a week sometimes and has some other things that require fuel such as a 2nd vehicle, waverunner, boat etc. THEN he can talk about how he can afford all that gas.

Message: Jez that wat guy sure has his head up his a$$.
My reason is the 650 bucks a month I now spend on gas. There are plenty of kits available. Costs around 4K CDN for the electronic multiport injection system that basically act as the engines new fuel control center. It switchs the timing back and forth from propane to gas so you don't lost power. All I am looking for is to see if someone here has done this to the 4.7L.
Hey wat, your mommy wants her computer back. Time to run off to do your paper route. A$$hole

Message: I'm sure Wat can afford gas for that 5.2, but could he afford Gas for it, and a mortgage payment, and eletric, heat for the home, insurance, grocerys, property tax, healthcare? I don't think so. Its amazing how much a truck can kill your family budget when you have grown up expenses. I filled up and burned gas like a madman when I lived with my parents cause I had nothing to do with my money but waste it. Snippy little kid has no clue at all.
Back to propane, I would strongly discourage the conversion simply because of all the things that could go wrong, and you risk a lot doing it. Propane is okay if your juicing a diesel but honestly, If you need a pickup with good mileage buy a s-10 4 cylinder 5 speed. I hate saying that but its one of the few trucks that get good mileage.

Message: Thanks for the input! Yeah, it's not likely that I'll ever switch to propane since the up-front costs would not be returned over the remaining life span of my truck...even though I can keep it running forever (at least in theory). The people who benefit from it most are fleet trucks, cops, and other people that drive long distances on a daily or weekly basis.
If conversion is done poorly, a decrease in performance can result. If it is done right, however, it's possible to milk some more power out of the truck. The bottom line on this project is you definately need to do your homework...which I think "wat?" should get back to right now...
Thanks again!

Message: Yeah, I think that is the size of it. I am at 115,000 mile on my 2000 4.7. Run well but at 4500 bucks for the FMS electronic may not be worth it for the life left on this truck. It has run awesome but between running from the city where I work to my acerage where I live to the lake cabin where I play, the miles add up quick. May be a good Idea ay new but I have probably 1.5 -2 years till its gone. May just get a new Honda Civic for bombing around in and save the truck for hauling the sleds/quads and ski boat.

Message: can do conversion the old fashioned way with used
parts for a few hundred, and I do it all the time,
just get the appropriate size carb, and understand
that the octane of propane is best utilized with
serious compression, so a purpose built engine will
outperform an average gas unit, but a gas unit will
burn sluggishly on propane. they do burn clean in
any case and they will run a long long time.
