Subject: a/c clutch ? IP: Logged
Message: I have to ask this off the topic question because i need some advise.
My wifes 2001 caravan a/c clutch rumbles with a loud bearing growl.
Anyone replaced one before? Any hints or tricks?
I tested the system and the (134a) gas is fully pressurized. a/c works and clutch still engauges/disengauges. cooling system is still working.
comments? advise?
Gee, i wonder what will get done first! my new 4.10 gears or her growling a/c bearings?

Message: I need to replace the one on my '95 Dak. The reason I haven't you ask? Well a full compressor/condenser unit with clutch is $300. The clutch by itself (yeah, that tiny POS) is sold for $212! That's right, that gigantic compressor/condenser is only worth $88 to Dodge, even though it probably costs $100 or more to make. However, that $5 clutch costs $200+ because the rest is useless without it. How f*cked up is that?
Replacing it isn't too hard from what I can tell though. If yours is like mine, you use a 9/16 socket on the nut, pull the clutch-plate off, then the rest comes off. Put the new stuff on, but make DAMN sure the clutch-plate assembly matches up with the teeth on the shaft. It has a bunch of small ones, like gears, but it does have one REAL wide one. Tighten nut and enjoy.
