Subject: truck running warm

Message:
My truck is running warmer then i would like even with the 180 t-stat in it. My guage in traffic will move up to about 205-210 range. And thats without the a/c running. Really beginning to bug me a bunch. As we are not even getting warm here yet(austin TX). We have only been in the mid 80's all week. So i am very concerned for when we do start to warm up. When i am moving(60 mph+) the guage will drop below the 200 mark. So i am thinking it's an airflow problem. Any one else notice this?

In trying to fix this stupid problem i have replaced the: Water pump, fan cluth, t-stat, and rad. cap. Flushed the system several times.

My next move to try and fix this problem is i am installing a pusher fan on the lower half of the rad/cond. I plan on wiring this fan to run when the a/c compressor is running. I am hoping that this will help. Had to do this once a chevy pick up. But i did have very very cold a/c. So it was nice

Any thoughts?

eric

May be a bad thermostat, sticking partially closed. It's a cheap try.

Had a similar problem with mine, and the same things were changed. The warmer the weather got the hotter it ran. The problem ended up being a clogged radiator. Since the radiator has been changed I haven’t had any problems with it at all.

I'd think a clooged cooling-system. I dropped a 180t in my '95 318 and it runs about 195deg average, slightly lower on the road, and it maxes at about 215-220deg sitting in traffic with the AC on.

Now I did let it idle today for thirty minutes to see how hot it could get. I have a 180deg thermo and the better orange coolant. After about 30-35min, it crept up above the halfway mark. After about 40-45min, it was about 2/3 the way up the gauge. That's when I drove it to cool it down, and then parked it.

sephiroth,
hopefully, you fully flushed the old glycol (green) out before installing the dex-cool.(orange)
From my understanding these two coolants are not compatable and will clog or harden when mixed?

Yeah, I flushed it three times in a row. The stuff doesn't harden, it turns to a REALLY strong acid or base, I forget which. It'll eat through your heater-coil first, then begin ruining other parts of your coolant-system. Man I made sure you could drink out of my cooling-system before I added the orange, LOL!

92 5.2 110k miles. Having the same problem.
190-195 degrees @65mph but when I take it out
of overdrive and its turning 3k to do the 65,
temp crawls up to 205-210. Replaced radiator,
water pump, fan clutch, thermostat (180) but
still no help. Any ideas, anyone?

I have the same problem with my 2000 5.9 rt it is only getting to high 70's low 80's here and when I sit in traffic my temp gauge crawls up to about 210. I dont really worry to much though because for one there is an auxillary electric puller fan that comes on at 210 and once I get driving again it cools down pretty quick back to about 185-190. I did just recently flush my rad and put a 180 t-stat. Do you guys think I should worry about this or not.

Win, it sounds like you have a REALLY low-geared differential. Do you have a 4:56 or soemthing? The reason I ask is because 60-65mph on a normal Dak with the 5.2L varies from about 1600rpm (mine) to about 2000rpm (my father's with 3:92). 3000rpm on yours sounds like yours is geared for raw torque or something. If you are not running a low-gearing, I don't know what to tell you. Possibly your tranny-fluid is low and the clutch isn't grabbing properly. Still, 3K is exceedingly high for such a low speed.

Sephiroth, Win says it runs 3k when he takes it out of overdrive at 65. Thats about right, right? Thinking you missed that,or is it still over-reving?

OK,

After reading all the respones to my question(not gear related ) It looks like i am not the only one with the creaping water temp. RT in DC said that when sitting his truck creaps towards the 110 mark, but no problem as he has the elec. fan that kicks in.

Sephiroth said it best, when left ideling for a while it creaps up to 2/3 of the guage. He took his truck for a spin and it cooled right down. That is exactly what my truck is doing. As well as a bunch of other people who replied to this post.

And since the dodge boys decided that they do have a cooling problem installed a safty net by using the elec fan that comes on at 210. Like in RT in DC's 00 5.9 ltr.

I am going to go with my original thought that the mech fan is not pulling anoough air thru the rad. when sitting. So elec fan here i come. I will keep everyone posted as to how this goes. I truelly hope it works as well as i think it will :)

Hi Eric an electric fan will help you everybody is using the flexalite black magic 150, seems its the most powerfull fan we can get for our application.I did see a small improvement when I installed an electric fan but it did not lower my truck temp the way I tought it would .
I think the radiator is too small for these trucks, anyway good luck..

For the r/t ers..

210 in traffic is normal.
usually turning on the ac activates the electric fan and will bring it down some.

the electric fan will activate at 220 degrees anyhow...cuts off at 206 degrees.

1 have a 180 stat in my r/t..and use water wetter..i still see 210 at times...usually at about 180 though.

jic do a check on your clutch fan...if it free spins (manually spin it by hand)more than 5 turns it's fried...do this with engine cold.

the clutch fan is supposed to increase rpm between 190 and 205 degrees radiator leaving air temp.

so it's not a radiator issue it's the fan control.

imo for a 2000 r/t rig up a switch to activate the electric fan at a lower temp.

Actually if I switch off OD, I am around 2000~2200rpm at 65mph. 3000rpm is over 100mph for me! I can't see how a Dak can pull 3k and not be flying low. Must be a non-stock tranny or differential, or a problem.

Okey guys, here go's:
In answer to the question abt rear axle ratio, its
a 3.55 and yes the engine turns close to 3k out of
overdrive at 65mph. After reading everybody's
thoughts last night, I decided to pull the new
(modine 2758) radiator and have it flow tested.
Not a radiator shop in Kerrville has a flow tester
and was just about to forget about it but decided
to have the last shop I visited pull the top tank
and actualy watch water come up through the tubes.
It was 60 percent stopped up. Tried to run a rod
through the tubes, but the rod wouldnt go down
more than 6-8 inches even in the clear tubes.
Called Moline and talked to one of their engineers
and he said tubes were 1.5 x 14mm (mighty thin).
We have left it in caustic solution over nigt and
will try tomorrow to see if we can clear them.
Word of caution: Be absolutely certain the rest
of the system is really clean before installing
a new radiator as if you don't... you may wind
up just clogging the new one.. Many shops fail
to do this because its messy and takes too much
time... Hope this helps some of you

Jeez man, that sucks! No wonder you run hot!! I still can't figure out why you tach so high, but I'm glad you figured out your problem. Heat can kill faster than anything, especially with older oil or regular oil.

Sephiroth,

Just a quick question for you, and Im not tryin to be mean or anything............but what makes you think there's something wrong with HIS truck and not your's? Just curious. Plus, my father's '92 318 Dak. runs at about the same with OD off. Just a thought though....................ok Im done.

No offense taken. I only get offended when the children get on here and respond with flame-type content to try to make a point.

The reason I said that was because my friend Jason had a Ram with the 5.2L engine and 3:55 differential, and he turned what I turn also. My dad has 3:92 on his '98 5.2L, and turns more than either of us do. I also knew a guy when I first moved to Raleigh who had an older Dakota that was also 3:55 with a 5.2L that he'd rebuilt, and it got the same. Had another friend back home (rather dumb one) who had a '96 or '97 with the 5.2L and 3:55 gearing (2WD though) and he tached what I do. He wound up totalling that truck because he's an idiot. Still, I could probably check with a few others I know and have not ridden with and get the same or near-same results.

Well, I installed my 10" pusher yesterday. Pretty easy install, once i removed the front bumper assy. As i mentioned i have it wired to run when the a/c comp. is running.

Nothing really to report as of yet. It has gotten cool around here. Only got into the 70's today. But i am sure we will have warm weather before to long.
