I personally do not like to just spray the engine compartment down. I use simple green a a bunch of rags.

Message: I wouldnt ever use 409 on my engine or any part of my truck. That is a very strong cleaner that would deteriorate engine components overtime. I just lightly rinse off the dirty parts with the intake or air filter covered up.

Message: This is my bathing ritual before I take my bug to a show
First ...I cover up the carb and dissy with sandwichbags n zipties. Then I use a good engine degreaser. There is this stuff I normally use called "Steam" or somethinorruther. It foams up instead of just drip. Spray vigorusly, Let it soak, Hose down. Then I have a large SOFT brissle brush and a bucket of soapy water and scrub some, small areas a toothbrush, hose down. Thats it!!! Its clean!!!!
Then I pull the the other engine from the garage, dust off the crome and install it where the fleshly cleaned engine use to be.
Its a bug! I can do that!

Message: Can of Gunk...wait 15 minutes....pressure wash clean. Avoid spraying electronics. I have been doing this for years(>10). My 91' Dak engine looks new and it has 168K miles on it. I only use the Gunk when the regular pressure washer isn't taking the crud off(about once a year). I wash the engine about once a month.
If you have your truck rust-proofed, ask them not to spray the engine compartment. Otherwise, dirt sticks to the rust coating and it's very difficult to get it clean. If you keep your engine compartment clean, it won't rust.

Message: I agree with muzzy, except i use castrol super clean instead of gunk. it works great. dilute it 50/50 with water. when the engine is dried off from washing, try spraying some no touch tire care allover the engine, wait about 20 minutes and wipe off and acsess ( usually not much) i love this stuff. put a nice finishing touch on the engine compartment

Message: Another good product that I originally bought for my motorcycle is S100 or S1000. It is safe for all surfaces even paint, foams up and cleans to a shine. You can pick it up at most motorcycle shops. Just be careful about the water, I got my plug wires wet and it misfired a few times killing my pre-cats.
