Subject: compressor pulley bad
IP: Logged

Message:
While pulling a trailer with my 2000 V8 Dak, the a/c was on and smoke started comming off the compressor pulley and it was rattling. Does this mean the compressor is locked up or can just the pulley be replaced? Have taken off the belt and center bolt but can't get the c-clip off. The pulley is shot. Should the whole unit be replaced? Thanks,

Im surprise that u did not blow the heads of your engine. Everyone knows that when going uphill, or pulling something your a/c should be off, all it does is force your engine more. You need to replace the whole compressor, and while you are at it , replace the pulley with a stainless steel one, less weight and some pony gains.

The pulley has an electric clutch in it. And sometimes it burns up. What you were doing with the truck at the time doesn't really matter, towing or not. The load on the clutch is determined only by the effort required to run the compressor. If it burned up, I suspect that the compressor is locked. That's a bad thing.

As for running the compressor while towing, I rarely find that to be a problem. New compressors don't need that much power to run, so you're not losing much. And the cooling system is good enough that heat generally isn't an issue, either.

If you get to the extremes of the performance envalope, turn it off. Otherwise don't worry about it.

The last thing you want to do is install a stainless rotor-the clutch won't work because it is non-magnetic.

Clutch failure is usually indicative of internal failure. To check it, reinstall the nut onto the shaft without the armature plate. Try to rotate the compressor clockwise. It should turn with minimal effort and without any rough spots.

Hey, if you want it, I have an entire Sanden R134A compressor/condensor unit with working pulley for a Dak. Thing retails for $300+ at Dodge, I'll sell it for $50 + S/H. It is only missing the clutch-plate (the little thing you can pull off when you loosen the nut on the shaft) but you could use your old one. I would be happy to post images. The outside of the pulley (where the belt turns it) is a little rusted from sitting up, but I just tested it and it still works.
