Subject: Cat back=nothing IP: Logged
Message: It's official (to me anyway), cat backs do nothing for the 4.7. I have a kenne bell blower and i added a Magnaflow 3" cat back exhaust. I took it back to the dyno and got absolutely no power from it. I figured i was going to get a little because of the charger but nope.... nothing. Sounds sweet though..... which is pretty much why i put it on anyway.

Message: hey RaZoR1, just wondering if you still had your third cat or not. Maybe that could be the difference.

Message: The restrictive part in our trucks is the y-pipe. Replace it or bore it somehow and you'll notice a difference even with stock exhaust. That thing is really restrictive!

Message: Sephiroth, where should I be looking for the "y" pipe? Do you mean where the exhaust runs into the cat?

Message: The Y is the pip that bolts onto the two exhaust manifolds and then forms them both into one single pipe that goes on back down the line. Where you have two pipes going into one that is only a hair larger in size, you get a lot of resistance, which is why doing a cat-back isn't noticeable.

Message: Maybe we could contact gs motorsports and only order the pipes with the high flow cats. They are 2.5 inches in diameter. I know its two separate pipes in their exhaust kits, but we could have them come together at a Y and then just run our 3" cat backs. I think with our HO cams, manifolds, and throttle bodies that this set up would work out fine. Especially if we already have a 3 inch cat back on our trucks now doing us no good.

Message: YOu mean you want to cut your y and run two seperate exhaust pipes? Or do you mean true-dual back to this thing, and then normal single?

Message: true dual going into a single. check out the kits on gsmotorsports.com i'm talkin about running the pipes off the exhaust manifold that are in the kits and y ing then to our 3" cat backs.

Message: Exactly. That's just an expensive, heavier way of getting a better y-pipe. Only difference is you have more pipe, so it weighs more. Just buy a better y-pipe and be done with it.

Message: Or you could do like I did. Take third cat out of the equation, buy a flowmaster 2 1/4 into 3 y-pipe out of summit $40.00, go to muffler shop have them cut the stock pipe and Y off at the precats, and run 2 1/4 back to new Y $55.00. I could tell the difference in sound(not as restrictive sounding). Seat of the pants says -more mid, upper RPM power and no bottom end lost- No pcm codes and no problems! I need a muffler though. Thinking of going with dynomax. Its way to loud for daily driving, and not to mention it gains unwanted attention of the RADAR GUN ACTUATORS.

Message: razor1...actually, the "third" cat is all u have, no precats, just one main cat. your right though, if any 4.7 was to benefit from a catback u would think it would be a single cat one, i guess it really has more to do with the diameter (or lack thereof) of the y-pipe and not the precats
